Q: Do you need to have a rail system or will it work well without using one?

You can screw two 4x4's to the log. I bought two 10 ft. 1.5x1.5 angle iron steel for $35.

Q: Does Zozen sell a hand crank for the saw mill?

Not that I know of. I mounted a hand crank boat winch. Works great.

Q: How long of a log does it cut?

It will cut a log as long as the rail system you are operating it on. You must have a rail system to make your first cut. There are You-tube videos to help with what you need to do. I use a heavy duty ladder section to get my first cut.
