Q: Won't the air holes in the back wall make the bread stale if not wrapped up inside the box?

Keeping bread fresh requires a careful balance between airflow and humidity. You need to hold the moisture to prevent staleness, but if you stop ALL airflow, mold will grow much faster. Bread boxes are supposed to be a little less than air tight, and you are supposed to store bread unwrapped in them.
