Cardboard
I almost returned this, but since we're just learning, and I only paid $20, we decided to keep it. We can learn while we hunt for just the right set for keeps. This is reasonably priced and might make a good gift for kids. It's about the same price and quality as a jigsaw puzzle.

Mahjong?!
I bought this as a gift but never gave it to the person. Why? Well, I should have listened to the reviewer who said that this version of the game was not a "full" version. The suits—cracks, dots, and bams, especially—only go to number 6 and that's not accurate. I don't play American Mahjong so I can't comment on that version in this set. I bought this game because the description on the box indicated that the company had consulted a cultural advisor about it. I’ll take a look at their YouTube videos describing the play but I think this version will simply confuse people who may decide to actually learn how to play the game! So, if you buy this game, go with the saying that there are as many ways to play Mahjong as there are players! I do NOT recommend this version of Mahjong—there are many good tile sets available on Amazon that don’t cost much more than this one and good rules are readily available online.

Fun For the Family
I wanted to teach my grandchildren Mah Jongg so I tried this game. They live in another state so I didn’t have my set. This was fun, but not like the real game.

Very well made and a good value.
The media could not be loaded. The Ravensberger brand is synonymous with quality construction, and this game doesn't disappoint. All the boards and cardboard tiles are very sturdy, printed perfectly, and easy to remove from their frames. All the boards, screens, and tile boards came securely wrapped with paper bands to keep them from sliding around and rubbing on one another. The box itself is heavy and securely put together. Top notch quality! There are two instruction booklets included: one for the Americanized version of MahJong, and the other for the Chinese version. Both booklets are printed in English, so that was a relief. This is a game for FOUR players, so I haven't yet had the chance to try learning it as we need one more player (I'm looking at you, next-door-neighbor!). But the instructions seem pretty easy to follow, and on each player's screen are some simplified instructions to remind them of how to play the game. I appreciate that!I'm hoping to learn this game soon and then purchase a real tile set, but for now, these small tiles will work just fine. They are so well made that I expect they will last quite a while.I think this is a good value, even though everything is made of paper and cardboard. There are a LOT of pieces in this set. I'd buy it again.

Cute game for kids, but this is NEITHER Asian nor NMJL mah jongg!!
Some background: I've been teaching mah jongg professionally for nearly 15 years, and playing the American version since I was in middle school in the late 1970s. I have taught at libraries, country clubs, city park and rec centers, and to private individuals, and I am considered an advanced National Mah Jongg League player. So these are my thoughts:This is a cute game for kids and family night, but it is extremely different from either the Asian or American (NMJL & Wright Patterson) versions of the game. Please do NOT purchase this to learn to play the actual games. This set does not teach the rules of those games.First off, this set contains neither Flower (aka "season") nor the 16 Winds tiles. It only contains craks, dots, bams, the dragons, and jokers (for American play). Thus, you cannot play the majority of NMJL hands with this set. And you cannot play Asian or Wright-Patterson versions without these tiles either.Even stranger, instead of four of each of the suited tiles and dragons (as required in both the Asian and American versions of the game), this set comes with EIGHT of each tile, and only up to the number 6! Completely omitted are any 7s, 8s, or 9s in any of the three suits! It is literally MISSING 60 tiles needed to play any actual version of mah jongg!!The quality of the decent for a board game. The tiles are fairly heavyweight for cardboard, and they punched easily out of their frames, leaving the cardboard tiles with smooth edges. You can see my photo that shows this. Please do NOT buy this game as a way to learn mah jongg. It is only tangentially related to the real games played both in the United States and around the world. As a retired K-8 teacher, I would say this is a good game for kids or family game night, similar to Rummy Kub. That's why I give it three stars. For adults trying to learn the actual game, I would have given it one star. Hopefully Think Fun, which is a fantastic company for educational games, will update their marketing and description of this game so that it is not misleading to adult buyers

Boy did I need this, teaches Mahjong inexpensively
First the components are top notch for the price. The cardboard chits work out wonderfully. Now I do own a Chinese and an American Mahjong set. I've not been able to learn nor teach my family to play until this came along. The rules are very straightforward and written in a way to understand them easily.Setup and packup is a cinch and though the box weighs a lot, it's nothing compared to lugging around a real set. This now sits on my top shelf game, and is a wonderful way to start down the Mahjong rabbit hole.Easily makes a great gift, but can also be played by teens, young adults, and adults, can be a starting point of learning or just stich with this and done. I played it with my kids 10 & 14 and it they learned it quickly as did my wife.

Not a full set of tiles!
The numbered tiles only go to 6 and there are no flower tiles. Do not buy this set!
