Q: Hi! I’m looking for others’ thoughts on the suitability of this vacuum for large-ish area rugs (placed on top of hardwood floors). Good or bad idea?

I just used mine for the first time last night on my area rug. I bought the specific area rug cleaner for it. I think mine is 8’x11’ and it used about half the tank of water, and the water was definitely dirty when I emptied it.

Q: Can this be used with other detergents? Amyone tried, what were the results compared to using the bissel cleaner?

As long as it doesn't foam or bubble when agitated. Actually I find best results just using really hot water.

Q: Does it require pads or attachments to help with mopping up the water? If they do, can you buy more?

No it uses a small amoun of water an that drys quickly

Q: Can you use this while it is plugged in?

Haven't tried. The cord is pretty short though.
