Exact replacement for Makita head
This replaced the worn out head...trimmer works like new now!A bit of a challenge to remove, just use the right size pin to lock the head from spinning.

SO MUCH EASIER TO LOAD
I bought my Makita string trimmer a year or two ago, and was plagued by the string jamming and felt like I was constantly tinkering with the head. Half the time, the string wouldn't feed out when I tapped it mid-use, and that is because the string was jammed on the inside. Once I replaced the head with this unit, all of those problems went away. No more jamming, easy refreshing, and simple to reload.I did have a little trouble locating it from a reliable seller. I tried buying it directly from a hardware store in the midwest that I found online, only to be informed that they were out of stock and weren't expected to be getting more this season (after a month of waiting). Also, unlike other third-party manufacturers who make replacement heads, this one doesn't add any additional noise while spinning compared to the default one.I hope Makita is smart and is using this redesigned head on all of its new string trimmers.

Good News, Bad News
For the past couple summers, I've really liked using my Makita line trimmer. The only thing I didn't care for was the unpredictable bump and feed head that came with the unit. The line wouldn't always advance, and I admit that part of the problem was I sometimes couldn't get the inner supply spool wound just right. Reloading that stock head is fiddly. So I was really geeked when I found this "rapid load" replacement head. It does perform better, but there are still some potential downsides to be aware of.The Good - This new trimmer head advances line better than the stock head. I think it's due in part to the line feed holes - they are oval and much larger on this head than on the stock head. The other factor is the winding mechanism on this head helps ensure that the line you load in gets wound on the spool correctly. The Bad - Even with this new head, I still find it easier to remove it from the trimmer when loading new line, so there's that. But the main downside to be aware of is that it takes a surprising amount of "oompf" to turn the rapid load knob when reloading new line. I would not have had an issue with this in my younger days, but now that I'm not so young, cranking on that knob with a bare hand puts a lot of stress on my hand and fingers. Maybe one of those cushioned lid opening tools would help... :)

A new line will not feed through the holes, and it is very difficult to wind
This trimmer head came with the Makita 36V trimmer I purchased. After a short period of use, a new line will not feed through the holes, and it is very difficult to wind.I purchased a new bump and feed head, thinking there might be an upgrade to the design. However when I took them apart they appeared to be identical in every way.But the old head still did not work and the new one did.Upon closer inspection and a lot of time, I discovered the cause of the problem. The bump feed knob can be placed on the string spool in two directions which are 180 degrees from each other! To prevent the spool from being placed in the wrong direction, there is a very very tiny plastic pin (1/8" long x 1/16" diameter) that protrudes up from the spool on one side. The knob can still be installed on the spool in the wrong direction, but it will be slightly crooked. This will cause the problems that I had: a new string will not start through the holes, and it will be difficult to wind.On my old head, this pin was broken off. Probably from bumping the knob to feed the line during use. So when I took it apart to diagnose the problem, everything looked normal. It was only when I compared it to the new head that I eventually discovered the problem. That teeny tiny little pin!!This is a design flaw that I hope Makita changes. All my other Makita products excellent 5 stars!

If you need this, buy it!!
This thing is superior. We replaced the head on one of our 36V trimmers with this and it is way better than the original. Feeds line really well - surprisoing how easy it works.
