Read this review…
This is a mortising chisel, it is not a general all purpose chisel. It’s specifically designed to cut square mortise slots in wood, that’s why it has a slightly tapered shaft and has very sharp square edges on that shaft to help cut neat edges on the face of the wood where the slot is. I have read other reviews written by people who simply do not understand why this chisel has been designed the way it has. Some think that the taper is an error (it isn’t, you would find it impossible to cut a neat mortise slot if it wasn’t tapered) and others think you should round off the shaft because it’s so sharp (you shouldn’t). I make fine hand cut mortise and tenon doors from hardwoods and these chisels are absolutely superb. They DO NOT need honing, are extremely sharp and hold a sharp edge for a very long time. Should you need to resharpen, it is simply a case of 4 or 5 forward pushes on a sharpening stone on the chisels bevelled edge and one drag back on the stone on the flat side of the chisel and you’re ready to cut with it. These are exceptional quality and great value, I’d happily pay 3 times the price for these and still consider them good value. In my opinion these are truly the best chisels to buy for mortise joints, your just wasting your money if you buy any other brand.

Great product, very sharp tip and edges.
Very sharp sharp, and helped me do a great job with it. I used it on a pine beam to shape a chanel for a 5mm wide lead strip. Did the job very well.

good tools
i had heard about Narex and expected the usual half truths, i also read that they were Check inferior came blunt and were a b@#ch to set up. here is what i found... chisels come SHARP out of the pack (no box), shafts are THICK quality heavy steel ( you may want to take sandpaper to the shaft corners as they are true and sharp corners may be uncomfortable). handles are lovely finished dark wood with satin finish, the ferrules where handle joins blade and where strike nub is are both sturdy anfit for purpose steel instead of the usual inferior brass, aliminium or even resin. all in all these are comfortabl to hold and thick adn heavy enough to reassure that they wont bend or snap if given an over enthusiastic whack into hard wood. their price is not bad as i have paid more for ordinary brand name chisels that scream "dont hit me or apply pressure" i will be buying the range

Good quality but tapered sides
I'm happy with the quality of this chisel, but be aware if you're looking for a registered mortise chisel (i.e. with square sides) this is actually slightly tapered to reduce friction, so you have to be a bit more careful using it. I can't see anything about this in the description so thought I should put this warning here. I know that's by design but I'm dropping a star because it's not made clear before you buy it.

Superb chisel and at a sensible price
Narex chisels are excellent: superb tools and a bargain compared to the likes of Veritas. The Narex steel, handles and feel are all great. The handle is lighter than it looks, but beautifully balanced and easily copes with mallet strikes. The blade cuts the edge cleanly, with little clean-up required. As with all chisels, the blade needs honing before use. The back of the blade was so flat that it barely needed lapping. Also, it was easy to sharpen the tip and add the secondary bevel. I found the first mm or less of the steel was slightly 'mushy' (which is normal) but once you get into the good stuff you'll find the Narex can chop through anything. I'd bought Narex because I couldn’t afford Veritas PM-V11 chisels, but now I'm sticking with Narex.Great tools at a sensible price too.

Great chisel
This DEFINITELY should be sharpened before first use. Only needs a minute on the sharpening stone and it's razor sharp.

Strong, well made 6mm chisel. Needed a good grind and deburr, no a useful part of my toolkit

For the price this is about as good as it gets
Superb... Not an Ashley Iles or a Lee Nielson but not their prices either. Good depth front to back so o eady to 'steer' straight.
