Q: How thick is this carbon pad?

The thickness is 1/4" to 3/8". It's a little fuzzy and fairly firm.

Q: I tested water for Nitrate before adding in my prefilter, no change in nitrate after 12Hr anyone tested water?

I don’t think you can expect the filter to have than much effect on nitrates. It’s more to filter out particulates and food the fish don’t eat.

Q: Can you combine a nitrate filter with an ammonia filter?

As long as it fits your filter box/canister

Q: When using the nitrate filter media pad do I pull filter cartridge and only use the nitrate pad.?

No, I use this along with a phosphate absorbing pad in conjunction with my filter cartridge. Continue to use your filter cartridge with the nitrate filter media.

Product Description Acurel Ammonia Reducing Media Pads are durable polyfiber pads infused with special ammonia-absorbing particles to pull ammonia from aquarium or pond water. Ammonia, the leading killer of tropical fish, is the result of fish waste and decomposing food in the aquarium. To be used as a preventative measure - not a remedy for sustained ammonia concentrations. This thicker, more rigid design performs better than other media pads.
