Q: what kind of batteries are best for it?

Dear Customer, Thanks very much for your question about our Laser Distance Meter. We have provided 2x1.5V AAA Alkaline batteries in the package, the laser measure will power off automatically after 3 minutes without any instrument to save batteries. You can see the package photos shows we included: 2 x 1.5V AAA, 1 x portable bag, 1 x portable bracelet. Please kindly note the default reference setting point is rear. Q: Is it allowed for air travel?

I would imagine it is. As long as you are not firing the laser into the stewardesses eyes! Keep it in your cabin bag. A phone has more capabilities!
