Powerful storytelling
My daughter is getting bigger and we can start tackling bigger books now. My daughter reads some of the book, and then gets me to read a bit more of it to her. This one is a good start. It is beautifully illustrated, and so the immediate visual impressions are favourable. The writing is just as good as the pictures. Michael Morpurgo has done a superb job in bringing the story to life, and making the characters deeper and more vivid than in briefer retellings of this story. This is an excellent book, and I think children between 6 and 10 will appreciate it, both for its beuaty, and for the rich characters described within it. Adults will enjoy reading it to their children- which is always a good sign in a children's book.

A beautiful book, less pictures that I thought there would be but my 6 year old didn't seem to mind. It is a bit scary in parts but I guess that's what the brothers grimm intended! Michael Morpurgo has put a wonderful spin on this classic tale. I love the way the characters are bought to life.

Lovely for 4 y.o and above
The media could not be loaded. It’s a lovely book. I would say this book is suitable for 4 years old and above. My son is 2y.o, he finds each page too long and keep asking me to flip to see the image.

Much too scary
We didn't like this book as it was too scary for both our girls 3 and 5.It is a shame as the story is still a good one.

Another book to be added to Michael Morpurgo’s already vast array of beautiful books for children.
I think we all know the story of Hansel and Gretel, who wandered into the forest and were captured by the witch who lived in the gingerbread house. In Michael Morpurgo’s adaptation he takes the story and gives it a little shake and adds his own spin on it, bringing it right up to date for today’s young children to enjoy. The first thing you will notice when opening this book is how elegant and outstanding the illustrations are, they really do add character to the book, and make it stand out amongst the other books of this famous fairy tale. They add an air of magic to the whole book.Michael Morpurgo always has a way of making a book that little bit scary, but in a good way, not in a frightening manner, a child friendly scare. His writing is superb. He is one of the best children’s writers’, and you always know that you are going to get a fabulous, engaging story from him, even if it is a rework of a fairy tale. He puts so much passion into his writing and that comes across strongly in all his stories. There are quite a lot of text and pages in this book, so it wouldn’t really be suitable for those just learning to read, but those that are already accomplished readers should have no problem. It is also the perfect book to be read together, a lovely bedtime story.Another book to be added to Michael Morpurgo’s already vast array of beautiful books for children.Reviewed on Whispering Stories Book Blog*I received a free copy of this book, which I voluntarily reviewed
