Comprehensive and easy to understand
This is an excellent book. The new edition comes out in September but the 2013 version I purchased is right on the money with the information it contains. I highly recommend it! Four colleagues and family members have also purchased it with my recommendation. It's available in paper or audible.

Excellent introduction to Bipolar Disorder, for the mentally ill and their friends and family
I have a dear friend recently diagnosed with Bipolar, and bought this book to learn about the illness. It is a great, broad introduction to the subject. There is quite a bit of information about how someone with the illness can learn to understand their "triggers" and recognize when their mood is becoming unstable, and respond before reaching the full-blown crisis stage. The treatment of therapy is disappointing, though. The author gives very simplistic explanations of different techniques and seems to imply that someone can just apply the techniques to themself. And there seems to be a heavy emphasis on medication, but nothing about how nutrition can impact mental illness. To be fair, no single book can cover all the aspects of dealing with this complicated illness, and this is a very good place to start.I purchased a copy for my friend, and he liked it and learned a lot as well.

Highly Recommend
I wish they issued a copy of this to everyone when they get diagnosed, it would save so much time and trouble. This book is thorough and easy to read while including important things I've not found outside medical journals. Includes useful medication information beyond the scope of average doctor appointments, what it looks like in women and children, sample charts and contracts to use, and real life examples that help you navigate and understand similar situations written with a depth of personal understanding and compassion that is truly meaningful to anyone suffering from this illness. This book answers questions you needed the answers to but didn't even know to ask. It's an absorbing read if you want to understand more about the why's and how's of every aspect of treatment and a useful resource if you want to look up things as needed. I recommend it to anyone trying to gain more control over their own illness or explain it to others and anyone else affected by bipolar, including practitioners. It's the kind of book you're going to want to give a copy of to your doctor, or bring along so you can point to a page and say "This!".

Really surprised by how much it covered
As per the title of my review, I was truly surprised by how much it covered. Whether it was the comorbid conditions like anxiety and ADHD to the whole chapter dedicated to women with bipolar, including pregnancy with thorough detail--a topic which has been in my mind for a while, and this definitely helped me understand a lot of the aspects involved--and even guides for both family and patient to understand the condition and learn to work out misunderstandings and conflicts. I have an amazing psychiatrist and in conjunction with this book I feel a lot of comfort and support for my condition. I especially felt reassured by the fact that Dr. Miklowitz not only brings up different studies to give you insight into the different medications, possible complications, etc., but he also gives you details on the test subject sample size for each study, so that you can know that, "well, this study showed a link between this medication and this complication, but the sample size was these many people," so that you can get a good sense of how much certainty and/or need for concern we should have for each claim.Thank you for such a great resource!
