Using these to measure capacitances from sensors using 3.3 volt microcontrollers. A simple astable configuration with two resistors and the variable capacitive sensor translates the capacitance into a square wave frequency, which can be read using a digital microcontroller pin. Quite a few 555 timers require 5 volts or more to operate; these work down to 2 volts. They also operate at a low current including not having a surge when activated, helping them to fit into battery-powered designs.They arrived well protected against static.
