Failed 2 years and 6 months into daily use
At various times during the past year, the device this item was controlling did not come on when it should have turned on automatically by this unit. I check the unit and find it was "blank" had nothing on the screen.Which meant internal battery as well as the electricity I was supply was not turning the device on.I was puzzled by this for about 6 months and thought I had a faulty wall socket. But no this unit has died 2 yrs and 6 months after purchase. It came 2 in the pack the otherr one is not showing any problems. I suppose .28 per day usage is okay (17 cost/30 months) / 2 nbr units = .28.Ordering 2 more today now that I know the symptoms of failure. Overall a good product.

Nice to come home to
Bought to have light to come home to.Easy to install but pay close attention to setup directions.Self contained power so that when power goes off then on settings are retained. These work GREAT for setting holiday lights, INDOORS ONLY.

Timers are nice enough. The instruction sheet not so much.
The timers, at there current price, are nice. The instruction sheet not so much. Thanks to Mr. Mok for his review (April 1, 2013) explanation about the auto and non-auto settings. After reading his review, and testing the timer, this is how I think the instruction sheet for these settings should be written (and in this order, which is the same as in the timer):_____"ON" - The plugged in device is switched on permanently."AUTO ON" - The plugged in device is switched on and remains on until the next programmed off time, and the device will continue to be controlled automatically using programmed settings."OFF" - The plugged in device is switched off permanently."AUTO OFF" - The plugged in device is switched off and remains off until the next programmed on time, and the device will continue to be controlled automatically using programmed settings._____On the unit there are two "AUTO" modes. Both actually initiate Auto mode (control plugged in device using programmed settings), but the first one "AUTO" and "ON" (in the display), turns the device on instantly, and allows it to stay on until the next programmed off setting is reached, and the second one, "AUTO" and "OFF" (in the display), turns off the device if it is on, and the device stays off until the next programmed on setting is reached.Either "AUTO" setting can be used to tell the timer to control the plugged in device using the programmed settings. One just lets you turn off the device if it is on at the moment, and the other lets you turn it off if it is on, both without otherwise affecting the programmed control of the device. My intended use for one of these timers was as a sleep timer. In other words, I want to turn on my device when I want it on, and have it be turned off automatically at a certain time each day. While this timer will work for this, it requires more steps than I would prefer. For this purpose, the timer can be set with just the one programmed setting for off, say at 2am, but to turn the device on I have to set the timer to AUTO ON mode. The AUTO ON mode only works once to override the programmed off setting, so after each programmed off time is reached in this mode, I have to manually turn on the device via the timer's "+" (on) button by pressing it four times until the timer's AUTO ON mode is "re-activated" (and the device is so turned on).Another related reason I got this timer was to prevent wasting electricity by having this device remain on all night and perhaps a good portion of the next day until I realized I needed to turn it off. For those interested (and because I could not find this info anywhere), I've tested these little electronic timers and found they use about 0.75 watts, so very little compared to leaving some devices on when you don't need them on.On another note, my two units came with the display already on and showing a time, unlike most battery powered time displaying devices that come with a battery pre-installed but requiring the removal of "tab" to actually connect the battery. Not a big deal if your purchased unit(s) hasn't been sitting in pre-sale storage for an extended period of time. But (assuming the manufacturer doesn't change this), if yours comes with nothing showing on the display you might want to be concerned that the back-up battery may have been overly depleted and perhaps its life shortened somewhat.Final thought: I might buy, or recommend (with stipulations), this type of timer again.

Works well if you don't need to change the setup
These timers work well and are quiet. You can set up two separate sets of on/off timing, which is convenient. The programming is not intuitive though. I had to watch a YouTube instruction video to get it set up. The setup process is not intuitive enough that you can remember how to do it again if you want to change the setting later.

Once You Figure Out How to Set Them, They Work Great
I have used these for more than 5 years now. I didn't want a mechanical timer because they sound like an egg timer and in a quiet room you always have that motor sound running which I did not like. These are super cheap so I decided to give them a try. The first pair I bought I damn near gave up on using them because I found the instructions hard to follow, and while trying to adjust it for things like daylight saving time I kept messing it up and would get frustrated. I even stopped using one for a while because I could not figure it out again after losing the instructions. But then I found a good YouTube video tutorial by a random individual, and now I have the hang of setting them again.Once one gets the hang of setting these, the features are nice and get the job done. I appreciate the accuracy of being able to set them to the exact time instead of a rough estimate which you have to do with a mechanical timer which often you can only set to the nearest 15 or 30 minute intervals. These units have an internal battery so it keeps track of the time even during a power failure which is really convenient. The battery lasts seemingly forever too. I left one unused and unplugged for at least a year, and was totally surprised the battery was still working and keeping track of time after all that time. The one feature I wished they included was a daylight saving feature (God I hate daylight saving!)... so twice I year I have to go around and adjust the timing by an hour. So, overall review these are good enough, once you figure them out. I found a YouTube video made them easier to figure out than the instructions they come with. And the price is great for the overall quality. I use these for my fish aquarium which I need a couple of timers for for things like lights and pumps to kick on and off at certain times. I also use them for Christmas lights so I do not have to burn them 24 hours a day because I am too lazy to shuffle around the house to manually turn them on and off everyday.Probably in the future I will upgrade to more advanced units I can control with the internet, but they are more expensive, and then in the age of smart home devices you have to worry about security from hackers. But those timers do have more features such as automatically adjusting to daylight saving or sunset and sunrise as it changes throughout the year, and also the ability to control them from outside the house.

The best!
It has everything: Multiple programs. On and off override while still retaining the timer schedule. Easy to program. Accurate. Reasonably priced. The best part- It is so small- it covers only two of the three receptacles of an outlet adapter.

Better than mechanical - easy to set, recommend!
Don't know what other reviewers are complaining about. I purchased a single pack of these last year at Walmart for $15 to control my aquarium lights. Now that I purchased a green killing machine UV sterilizer, I decided to see if Amazon had these timers, and to my luck they had a two pack for $25... which is cheaper since you save $5 by buying two of them at once, so now I can control my UV sterilizer and my air pump. These are the best... what more can you ask for? I know that you can't set certain days of the week, but for what I need, I need it the same every day anyways. I find them easy to set (the instructions clearly tell you what to do) and they have battery back up so there is no need to constantly reset your schedules. I find them the best, and way better than the mechanical ones because they are digital. I don't like mechanical ones because they are never accurate. Plus when the power goes out it messes everything up. At least digital ones are accurate. When I want something to turn on at a specific time, I want it to turn on at that time, not 5 mins after. I also like the space saving design - you can fit two on one outlet so they don't hog up all the room even if you just use one. Overall, I am very happy Amazon sells these, and I will continue to purchase them from here. I recommend these to everyone!

Good as a timer, but horrible display.
It is completely silent. I was so tire of hearing my old mechanical one while I was watching a movie. It's not completely easy to use. It was easy to configure, on that, it's a win. But the power button doesn't always make sense. It goes from ON, ON AUTO, OFF AUTO and OFF. I would have prefer ON, Auto and OFF. ON Auto and OFF Auto doesn't seem very logical for me. If I select the wrong one, is my programming switch over. And the display is horrible. You cannot see anything on this except if you are right in front of it while using a flashlight directly at the screen. It's like a 50 cents digital watch display. But except for that, it really works perfectly and silently. And that give that timer a 4 stars since it's doing the job of opening and closing light.

Does the job
I bought this to use with a floor lamp in my bedroom. I set it to turn on half an hour before my alarm goes off, to see if this helps me wake up. For the low price, it's a decent buy. It works, it doesn't take up much space and it's easy to set up if you follow the instructions. It would be better if there was a button to illuminate the display (similar to those "indiglo" buttons on digital watches), because it's impossible to read in low light. This isn't helped by the fact that the buttons don't click or beep when you push them, so you really need to look at the screen to see if you've affected anything. I also find that having the "on," "auto on," "auto off" and "off" settings mapped to one button is stupid: why can't I simply turn my appliance on and off, without having to verify the "auto" status each time? It's annoying. Still, I can't complain too much, since I knowingly bought a low-end timer.I would recommend this device to use with something you don't expect to interact with much, like indoor Christmas lights. Otherwise, you may want to look for something more user-friendly.

A small and very good Timer.
I've used them for a few days now and they work great. However setting up the timer did take time as the built in programming is not too logical. For instance to set the timer "on" , one has to press the "prog." button and then the "set" to set the start hour and minute. One would have expected that to set the "off" we go by the same route of "prog" and "set" but no. There's a different route for "off" and to activate that one has to press the "+" button and then the "set" button to fix the "off " time. The over-ride function also needs clarification. For the timer to work both "auto" and "off" needs to be displayed. There is no "auto" only display! But once one gets the hang of this, the timer works more than well for the price and should continue to do so for a long while if used indoors and with care. Thanks.

works well and easy set up
I purchased these to turn lights on and off for starting seeds in the spring in basement. Easy to follow instructions for set-up, and works perfectly. You have to read all of the instructions and follow them - make sure you go through the whole thing - but they are clear. I'm happy with this purchase and glad I paid a little more for the digital timer as opposed to the dial one.
