An Introduction to Probability Theory and its Applications, Vol 1, 3ed (WSE)

There's a high probability that this is an outstanding book
There are a thousand books on probability, how do you know that one is good? You choose one that has lasted fifty years. I love this book. It's the book that introduced birthday overlap problem to the world. It introduces Fermi Dirac statistics with such simplicity. The prose is lucid and so are the explanations. The good:1) Material and coverage: The topics are well explained. The coverage is extensive. Makes for a good reference, especially on non-measure theoretic probability2) Well referenced: Most other books you take would probably reference this as one of the sources for their material. Therefore it's potentially an "original source" for several problem areas. The bad: 1) The poor publishing: The book I think is out of patent and the publisher could have done absolutely anything with the content. Ie made it well formatted and presentable. What we get is an old book with hardly readable characters and small typeface. I dislike the publishing, but inspite of that I would recommend this book for probability enthusiasts. But it cannot be a main book in any course for the reason that it is not easy reading for students.2) The sequencing of topics is poorly done: The first four chapters are used to give a whirlwind tour of combinatorics and some applications of probability. While this comes before formal exposition (which starts at Chap 5), the material is not unreadable. Secondly, the applications have probably changed since the time this book was written.Summary: You will learn well if you read this, it's not outdated (except on some esoteric statistics topics). I do recommend to instructors to use this for your undergraduate probability course as one of the references, but not as the main reference.

Old is Gold
this is the perfect book to learn about discrete probability. it clearly explains (at least for me) from beginners level to a more advanced level topics but one has to have a basic understanding of mathematics and sets to understand the concepts. this book right here makes you go Old is Gold.
