Made of composite polymer material. Tough as hell and very light weight. Orvis put one out similar with their encounter rods as the set. Some snooty types look down on these and call them plastic but they're better than metal reels in many regards. The drag on these is fine. The reels don't mind being dropped on rock or concrete. They are a bargain. Spend your dough on the rod.

Is the reel set to right hand or left hand retrieve?

It is set for right hand retrieve but it can be switched, I've never switched one to left but the company says it's easy. These are good reals, I have one on my 3 and 4wt , I also use the 5 and 6wt size on my 3 and 4 wt as it reduces a lot of line memory, and it doesn't mess with the balance of the rod and reel at all. Other people have done reviews on these synthetic reels and gripe because when not in use the tippet or leader sometimes gets through the small opening between the spool and reel. I for one never take my reels off my rods so when I put them in my rod tube I tie my tippet to my hook keeper on the rod then reel it up to snug and presto , no jacked up mess to deal with before daylight. It is a sealed drag which also has composite components. If your looking for a reel that doesn't cost an arm and a leg and that works this one may be what you're looking for. Every rod I build for myself gets this reel.
