Works great, a few words of caution below
This stuff is great! We have enough iron in our water that it turns my hair orange in the shower (my hair is blondish). It stains the shower yellow and we get that nasty sulfur smell coming out of the pipes when the washer runs (from iron-fixing bacteria - bacteria that uses iron as an energy source and excretes sulfurous compounds - that's right, that smell if bacterial farts). The tubes coming out of the water softener containing water that should be treated and have little to no insoluble iron were stained yellow. That disappeared and became clear after the softener cycled a couple times with this stuff mixed in. The sulfur smell of microscopic toots vanished. I didn't notice any new staining. I didn't seem to need to use as much as it instructs to (especially for washing dishes/laundry in our second place which has no water softener). I quartered to halved the amount recommended for dishes/laundry. As others have mentioned, you do NOT want to breathe the dust that comes from pouring it. It's really bad (even with a dust mask on). I'm going to try putting it into a container where I can scoop it out instead of pour, so there's less dust. Also, its REACTIVE, so be careful. The instructions say to mix it with cold water (and don't warn about the reactivity) to pour into the water softener. Even though I used bottled water (thinking it wouldn't react to that), It turned into a bit of a volcano and overflowed my container. The overflow was partially dissolved crystals which stained my wood finish. So if you are mixing it, use a large container or a pail on a surface that won't stain (it was fine on granite and in the sink).

Worked miracles
This product is the best of the rust removers. My water has a lot of iron in it, and I did not know my water treatment system was not working properly. I thought I had ruined a brand new white quilt and sheets when they were laundered with the very rusty water. They came out yellow. I first tried Whink, which I've used for years, but had no luck. Then I tried Iron Out unsuccessfully. The water system repair guy told me Rust Out was the best, and he was right! My new quilt and new sheets are now white again. LOVE this product and won't bother to go back to using Whink.

great for cleaning rust.. wear a mask.
You can't breath when you use this product.. nasty nasty nasty. but it got the rust out of my water softener. Impressed but it was a little scary to use. If you don't have much rust go for the ResCare RK41N to clean your softener. Mine was way too dirty this time. one treatment cleaned everything. I had to flush my system 3 times to get the smell out of the water, but it was worth it for the cleaning it did to my system. My porcelain looks like new again.

Very effective rust remover
This product does exactly what it says it does. It removes rust and rust stains very quickly. To wash the walls of a shower that has rust on it simply put some granules on a wet sponge and rub it on the shower stall walls. Leave it on for 15 minutes. For rust stains that around the upper rim of your toilet use the gel form of this product, made by the same company. You simply flush the toilet, turn off the water spigot so no water runs into the toilet and squirt the get form of this product up under the rim. Leave on for about 20 minutes. Caution: do not use the dry granule form and the gel form together, they cause toxic fumes that burn your eyes. You can't even stay near the room, the combination causes a chemical reaction. Otherwise, I simply use the two products separately, they both work like a charm.

Be careful
I really can't say how well this works, as I also use "iron-out" salt, but between the two, little red staining coming thru my water. Easy to apply - tho it would have been SO much easier if the manufacturer would have built in a measuring cup (like cough syrup) as you add a specific amount per bag of salt. But BE CAREFUL when applying - this stuff is VERY aggravating to your lungs. Hold your breath when you are applying it, and leave the area for a brief time after you have to let the dust settle out.

Did a great job of getting iron out of my water softener. The media was overloaded with iron and had stopped filtering it out leaving the water cloudy, it was also releasing little pieces of iron that the faucet filters were catching. I did find that I had to double the dosage, there’s nothing in the calculation to account for how big the softener tank is and my first dose had no effect. Scaled up though and worked exactly as intended. Ran two backflush cycles and around one tank of water through after that, no residual taste in the water.
