Maxxis IT Desert rear tires
I've been using Maxxis IT Desert rear tires on my XR400 for about 5 years and they perform very well in the rocky deserts of Utah where I ride. The XR400 is really heavy, and sidewall of the Maxxis IT tires is stiff enough to keep the tube from getting pinched while running at speed, but not so stiff that the knobs won't turn in to face the surface while leaned way over in turns (running 13 psi). I laced up a 19' rear on my XR, so there is even less sidewall to work with. On heavy bikes like the XR400, these rear tires track straight under acceleration, and drift predictably under power while turning. Knob life is acceptable, one rear will usually last me a full 10 day trip, which is usually between 800-1000 miles. They work pretty well on blow sand when they are fresh, and great on loose dirt and hard pack all the time. Of course, anything will stick to sand rock. They wear pretty fast on the highway though, but comparable to the Dunlops and Brigestones I've used in the past. Pair the rear with a Maxxis IT front and the XR, which is already a very well mannered trail-bike, will handle great. I gave five stars based on the off-road surfaces the tire is designed for.

DO NOT BUY!
Installed a new set of the Maxxis Desert ITs for a 1000 mile trip in Baja. I wanted a tire that would last and had high hopes for this one, based on reviews. After 200 miles (max speeds around 60-65mph), I was missing two center lugs, torn off right down to the case. A third lug went shortly after. Had to finish the trip on a well-used Dunlop I was able to find in a small town, where I left the Maxxis rear (we did not have a support vehicle to carry it). Out of 5 riders on nearly identical KTM 525s and 450s, 3 were running Maxxis Desert IT or regular IT, and EVERY Maxxis rider ended up missing 3 or more lugs on the rear tires. The 2 riders on Bridgestone and Michelin had NO problems, and I had NO problems with my used Dunlop. I contacted Maxxis and they let me know the tire would need to be returned to the retailer to see if it would be covered under warranty. Obviously, I can't accommodate that requirement, so I'm left to share my story with other riders, and hopefully keep them from a similar experience. Because the same problem happened on two different Maxxis models and three different tires (and the company really couldn't care less), I will never buy another Maxxis tire.
