One of the classics
Toni Morrison is no ordinary writer and Beloved is one of her masterpieces. It is a must read for book lovers as it is a blend of history, psychology and fiction. The book delivered to me was of good quality, including the quality of the pages and print. Good job Amazon, keep it up!

Printing mistake
Received 2 days ago so Haven't read it yet but found a fascinating printing mistake. Seems like the letter I is printed in place of the digit 1. First noticed on the top of the page where page numbers are written and I thought well that's some stylistic choice. But then I started reading it and first word is I24 and that's when I noticed the printing mistake. I have decided to keep it.

Hauntingly beautiful
Beloved by Toni Morrison is a hauntingly devastating story of one of the greatest horror of society: The American Slavery. Set in the mid 1800s, we are familiarized with the life of Sethe and her two daughters. The younger one who goes by the name Beloved is dead by her mother's hands and makes appearances throughout the course of the novel. But I bet the ghostly aspect with scare you far less than the realities of this book.Toni Morrison's way of narrating a story is unique and it took me some time to actually get to the heart of the story. Some parts of the book is so intense that I had to close it in between and catch my breath. There are many instances in the book when you'll feel a chill run down your spine by the mere words that Morrison uses.Beloved is a prolific example of the superiority of American Literature. If you like a piece of good Literature, this one is definitely for you. 💖

Slightly conflicted!
Sometimes I come across books that I did not enjoy or at least not as much as I thought I would, but have always appreciated the idea, the gesture, the larger purpose of them and Beloved by Morrison is one of those books.Sethe, a former slave lives with her daughter Denver in a house haunted by the spiteful ghost of her dead baby, who died nameless and whose tombstone is engraved with a single word, Beloved. Jumping back and forth in time, before and after the civil war, this book traces the unbelievable brutalities human are capable of inflicting on others, the effects and trauma of slavery and how Past keeps on catching and nudging those willing to forget it. This is heavy, in its plot, in its structure, in its vernacular. As one must have heard from others, it’s a difficult book to get into. But fortunately, it took me only thirty pages to get acquainted with the rhythm and once you catch it, the story unfolds like a large and intricate picture. What makes this novel so difficult is the way it’s narrated; Morrison imagines how, if given the opportunity, a slave would tell his/her story. The narration is fragmented, more like memories and recollections sewn together, things described rather than named because they wouldn’t have known what to call those things and the heavy use of magical realism and metaphors which makes it even harder to follow. While reading, it feels like a ghost story and on multiple occasions it reminded me of Shirley Jackson’s novel We Have Always Lived In A Castle. Now onto the problems. Firstly, the pacing is unsatisfactory; where it should have slowed a bit, it rushed and where it should have rushed or skipped, it trudged. Secondly, the book falters a bit and loses grip on the story especially by the end; the beginning as well as the middle is where the book is at it’s glorious peak. Thirdly, there’s too much reiteration of the same things, same incidents and feelings. There is so much to unpack, so much to discuss and I’m definitely sure I’ll revisit it again.

Deep Work
This famous book from Toni Morrison explores the physical, emotional, and spiritual devastation wrought by slavery. She was awarded the Nobel Prize in literature in 1993. It is not an easy read as it involves the use of many metaphors. Nonetheless, it is a deep work.“She told them that the only grace they could have was the grace they could imagine. That if they could not see it, they would not have it."
