Nice and easy for a quick lunch.
Everyone’s tastes are different, but I really enjoyed this Mexican chilli flavour. I enjoy spicy foods, and this definitely ticked that box. The instructions say to add 200ml of water, stir, and loosely cover for 5 minutes. I found the rice still a bit hard, so next time I’ll try 220ml of water and leave it for nearer 10 minutes. I think as long as you’re not expecting it to be like a fresh, home-cooked chilli, you should enjoy it. I like the fact that I can get a quick, easy, and nutritious lunch for less than 400 calories.

Quick and nutritious.
On paper, this is an incredible concept. In reality, it's still a great concept, especially for those who don’t have time to prepare a healthy lunch; however, it isn’t perfect. What makes this Mexican chilli great is that it’s convenient, portable, and has a long shelf life. It’s quick to prepare; all you need is a bowl, add some boiling water, and wait several minutes – then it’s ready to eat. I’m a very busy person and struggle to get my nutrition in, so it’s very handy for me to have something like this for my work lunches. My main criticism is that I find the taste of the Mexican chilli too hot and spicy, as the chillies overpower the rest of the flavours. To be fair to the product, it is named a "Hot and Savoury" meal, so it’s not exactly a surprise. I just feel that it's too hot and not ‘savoury’ enough. The texture, once made, is mostly soup-like, which goes down easily and quickly. The beans add a nice crunch. Overall, I like this and would happily try other flavours. However, I am slightly put off by the cost of this multipack. At the time of reviewing, each meal costs £3.11, which would be difficult for me to justify when comparing to the cost of fresh food.

CHANGED RECIPE - For the worse!
I used to love Hot & Savoury Chilli but Huel have clearly taken the repackaging as an opportunity to change the recipe and it's 100% for the worse. They've stripped out a lot of the good ingredients and replaced them with UPFs (maltodextrin is the 4th highest ingredient!) and although they've thrown a load of vits in at the end the meal no longer tastes in any way appealing, healthy or fresh. Remember those lovely grains and the back taste of coriander? All gone. Tastes like a (bad) ready meal pot. Of course, no reduction in price, though! This product is no longer worth the premium paid. Never again.

Very good, given what it is
Dehydrated food is only ever going to be so good, so I am reviewing this in comparison to other dehydrated food I have used. On that basis, this is rather good. Easy to make, just add 200ml of hot water, stir and give it a few minutes. It looks pretty unpleasant, but the taste and texture is better than the appearance suggests. It does rely heavily on spice and it at least a two on the supermarket three-chili scale. Most food can be rescued with spice, and I suspect that without the chili this would be a much lesser experience. It is filling enough for a light lunch, and when I added some fresh fruit I was done until dinner. Would I eat this at home as a meal replacement? Probably not. But where it really scores is as a camping food supply, such as DofE, where you want maximum nutrition for minimum weight. I have tried a couple of dehydrate camping meals in the past and they were not nice at all. This Huel meal is head and shoulders above them. Overall I am giving this five stars, for being very good dehydrated food and for being an excellent camping option.

The taste is alright, but it can be improved with some extras. I'm not a fan of the texture.
The preparation instructions for this Mexican chilli pack say to mix 200ml of boiling water and the contents of this pack in a bowl. Stir well, then cover for 5 minutes to complete a final stir. The consistency is quite watery, similar to risotto. This mainly consists of rice and red beans. In terms of taste, it does have some flavour, but it lacks salt and spice for me. I've added a pinch of salt with a homemade garlic sauce, and it makes it a lot better to eat. There are bits that taste similar to beef, but I'm surprised that this is all vegan. The heat levels weren't there at all. I've made this a second time using 150ml of boiling water, and the consistency was less watery, but then the rice became hard as it wasn't able to be fully soaked in water. Something between would probably be the sweet spot. For a meal that takes only 5 minutes to prepare and contains a lot more nutrients, such as protein, fibre and vitamins compared to something like a pot noodle, it is far better in that regard. Each pack is about 3 quid, and the contents inside make up for the price as these are pretty much 7 meals. That being said, would I get this again? Probably not. I would have this if I were starving and I was offered it, but I don't think I'll go out of my way and purchase this. If you like convenience and assurance that you are getting a balanced meal, I would say give it a go, as we all have different tastes.

Pretty yummy!
Really tasty! Quite spicy, good amount of beans & visually looks like proper chilli. The portion size is pretty good - filling a normal sized bowl and perfectly okay for lunch. Has some spice to it and would say it’s a medium one! Not ideal if you don’t like spice.

It is very disappointing that they send something like this with less than 3 months of shelf life… The star is just for that, because these meals are good for what it is (at least the flavor I tried so far).
