I'm from Southern Louisiana and Chicken & Sausage Gumbo with potato salad was a frequent meal in our house. I always made it like my mom taught me but, for some reason, I have completely lost my touch for making a roux correctly. After many recent attempts and failures, I just gave up and started using the roux from a jar, which is a pain in the rear because it's almost impossible to mix the roux paste with the oil in the jar and not worth the effort because it just doesn't taste that good anyway. Then tried some well known brands in the box (powders) and really didn't like them at all. Bought this 4 pack of Jambalaya Girl on the recommendation of a friend who bragged about it. I was so happy with this base and will be buying more. I did one addition to it, though. I did find that the taste was a bit too salty for me and also on the really thin side. I remembered that I had a can of Blue Runner Gumbo Base in the pantry that I recently bought and planned to try and it has all the seasonings needed in it so no need to chop any. After I opened the Blue Runner can, I dipped the tip of a spoon in it and tasted it. The Blue Runner Gumbo Base is not salty at all, so when added to the pot with the Jambalaya Girl Base it balanced out perfectly and it gave the broth of the Gumbo a little more body making it a tad bit thicker. I used one carton of Chicken Broth and 2 cups of water for the 6 cups of liquid, added Chicken, Andouille Sausage and 5 or 6 sliced Hot Dogs...my mom used to get a big thick 6" cut of garlic bologna and chunk it up to add into the gumbo, but I can't even find that anymore and I find the hot dogs give a similar flavor. Definitely gonna be making a Shrimp, Crab and Okra Gumbo next with this and the Blue Runner Gumbo Base. You can get the Blue Runner here on Amazon but it's pretty price....I'm luck because I can get it in any grocery store near me at less than half the price. I do recommend the Jambala Girl and the Blue Runner.

I have been using Zatarains for decades since I moved from Louisiana. It is pretty good, but didn't really have the text, color or flavor of the genuine rouxe based file gumbo that I loved from the bayou. Found Jambalaya Girl on the discontinued rack at Walmart and decided for a buck it was worth a try. I cooked it up just like the recipe called & I can't tell you how blown away I was when I tasted it. Dark in color, very rich in flavor without spice that kills off your taste buds. It is not near as rice heavy as Zatarains, but depends more on Chicken and Sausage to make it thick and rich. It tastes just like all the File Gumbo I used to eat in New Orleans, Lafayette and Shreveport. Went back to Walmart and tried to find more. No luck! Found it on Amazon & bought two boxes. I have not ever found any box mix until now that was as good and authentic. Love Jambalaya Girl!
