Grace Jones: Bloodlight And Bami [Blu-ray]

Just followed Grace Jones around with a camera crew, but with no narrative or vision
Didn't think it was possible to make Grace Jones a boring and mundane subject, until I found myself doing my sadly more engaging Amazon Fresh grocery shopping while 'watching" this. This is 2 long hours of random slice of life stuff spliced between concert footage. Your time is better spent on the excellent docs on Amy Winehouse, Nina Simone or Lady Gaga, which are rich with context, history, family and friend recollections archival photos and video, and most of all, a clear narrative sensibility that comes from having a perspective on the subject.Any person with passing knowledge of Grace Jones would AT LEAST film her in the performance art of getting dressed in the morning. That in itself would have been a master class worthy of the peerless Iris Apfel and the daily creating on oneself as art. This is a woman who was raised by two militantly religious patriarchal father figures, in a strict apostolic Pentecostal holy roller culture where faith is performative. No politely stiff Episcopalians here. At age 70 when filmed, the lady surely must have come to some perspective, even if the director has not, about her life, her career, the journey from oppressive men to raising such a quietly-in-the-background son, being a black woman in the avant garde, and so much more ....What does this director even want to say about Grace Jones?? Beats me. She's just watching.

Iconic Persona Boring film
I'll start off by giving Ms. Jones her props, she looks better than ever and hasn't aged a day. That said I have no idea why she would make documentary about herself with no energy or excitement. It wasn't fun it wasn't interesting, I couldn't even call it bland. So glad I waited for a free trial to see it.

Grace Jones "Bloodlight and Bami": wonderful!
I was so happy to be able to get a copy of "Bloodlight & Bami" since I missed it's theater run. The item was listed as "region free" playback, however when it arrived, a sticker on the back of the case said "region 4". Before just returning it I took a chance, opened it, and to my relief it did play on my DVD. After that little blip I was just blown away by the film. Grace Jones is so original and amazing, I discovered again why I have loved her since the day she burst onto the map. It's also a good companion to her autobiography "I'll Never Write My Memoirs". Now if only her early VHS of "One Man Show" was available on DVD.

Slow
This is a bit slow in parts, and it doesn't encapsulate much of her career, or life. It focuses on the recording of a recent album. I wasn't that familiar with Grace Jones, and I still feel as though I don't know much about her life, thus far. But I will say, as a bassist, that the basslines in her songs are fantastic. Great musicianship, overall. Not to keen on her lyrics, but I do appreciate the uniqueness of them.

Incredible
Loved it. Saw it in the theaters. And had to have a copy for myself. GJ is an icon who doesn't get the respect she deserves. There would be no Madonna or Gaga if it weren't for her blazing the trail.

Brilliant! Life lessons AND beautiful aesthetic rather than pure disco facade.
Y'all, this was so beautifully well done and inspiring. I think the coverage of her upbringing was the primary focus and created a tie-in to the culmination of her work. It definitely softened her image for me, yet her fierce spirit kept me in awe. If you're looking for life lessons rather than pure disco facade, this is the perfect Grace Jones documentary.

Bloodlight and Bami
Although only recently released, I think this DVD must have been made some time ago, because it focuses on the recording of Grace Jones brilliant 2008 album "Hurricane". We see the iconic Grace performing her hits in concert around the world, and a more intimate look into her life in her homeland of Jamaica with her mother and family. Grace is everything you imagine her to be, still hedonistic in her sixties, avant-garde, talented, beautiful in her own unique way, but also slightly terrifying. It's recorded over a four-year time period and is an interesting documentary, but one I think for true Grace Jones fans.

Why is Grace Jones the Iconic Singer She Is?
This is a great film about iconic singer Grace Jones depicted with stage performances that include songs from her recent studio album from a couple of years back.As a Black Female Popular Singer, Grace Jones is one of the most iconic singers that the music industry (around the world) has EVER produced. She is iconic not just because of her music but also because of her looks. The biggest discrepancy of this new film, is there is not enough information of WHY Grace Jones is iconic and of the things that truly motivate her as a music artist. Her importance is just as influential as Diana Ross in what she brings to popular music as a Black Female Singer. The public deserve a film with these important perspectives and Bloodlight and Bami just fails short of describing the truly important elements of WHAT motivates her incredible arts and music forces. This is the reason I have not given the film the complete 5 stars in my review of this new film.

Underwhelmed unfortunately
I was really excited about this so when I got around to watching it it was quite the let down I thought. The effort was there but it just lacked cohesion and narrative to pull you in and instead just became a succession of random clips that left you bored and slightly frustrated. The best bit for me was the concert bit where sheβs wearing the disco ball bowler hat and the laser light is reflecting off it, really cool. Wish the rest had been just as exciting. Read the memoir instead.

Grace deserved better
There has been a glut of documentaries about modern icons of late. Some of them - Amy and McQueen - have been rivetting. Bloodlight and Bami is dire. It lacks cohesion, seems to have no point, and is shot in a very soft/blurred focus. Worth watching only for those scenes when Grace is on stage.

Enjoyed, but wanted more.
If you are a fan of Grace Jones you will probably love this documentary, if not you will switch off after 5 mins. Being a fan, I did enjoy it, but I felt there was something missing. Loved her on stage performances which shows her in full glory, not so sure about the clips from Jamaica. I know this was filmed over many years, so perhaps this is why it was slightly disjointed.
