As you probably know, the different grit levels in nail files are similar to those of sandpaper, i.e. the higher the number the smoother the file (or the number of pieces of grit per square inch). Grit is an ideal measurement for determining the roughness of metal and paper files. However, the roughness of Czech Glass Files cannot be easily compared with the roughness of paper or metal files. They are completely different surfaces. The main difference is that paper or metal files have grinding grains attached to the surface of the file, while glass files have grinding elements formed right out of the surface of the glass body. We classify our Nail Files as Fine - Medium Grit, so they probably fall in the 240 - 180 grit category. They have a higher grit then most emery boards, but a lower grit then metal files, which are generally quite coarse.The main thing when choosing a nail file is to make sure it's not too rough & therefore damaging on the natural nail. When in doubt, it's always better to err on the side of caution and go with a higher grit or smoother file. You can also use Czech Glass Nail File alongside other files if needed. For thick or difficult nails, you can use a metal file or paper file (although, we do not recommend using these for long lengths of time as they can damage the natural nail) and use a Glass Nail File to smooth the nail edge, for a beautiful finishing touch. It all depends on your nails, whether they are thick or thin, healthy or frail, and what suits your needs. At Bona Fide Beauty we believe in supplying our customers with gentle nail care tools and do our best to avoid anything that causes damage or harm to the natural nail.The fine grit of Czech Glass Nail Files makes them an ideal nail care tool for shaping the free edge of the nail and for smoothing out bumps & dis-colorations. It is gentle on the natural nail and can therefore be used regularly - even daily. Unlike Metal or Paper files, the surface of the Glass Nail File is designed to file in a backwards & forwards motion without damaging the nail or tearing the keratin layers. It effectively seals the keratin layers in the nail, leaving your nails smooth & healthy and avoids shredding them like harsher files can do. It can also be used on artificial nails, we recommend when doing this to regularly wet the nail file with water for optimal results.I hope that helps you out. Thanks for reaching out :)Kind Regards, Jess @ BFB.FYI, some info on Grit:500 grit - is soft and normally is only used to polish the nail itself and not for shaping/filing240 grit - an ideal grit for buffing natural nails to a smooth finish or buffing away stains. It is also recommended for use on fragile, weak or damaged nails180 grit - the lowest grit appropriate for natural nails. Good for filing both finger and toenails down and into your desired shape, however if you have weak or damaged nails then you should probably try a finer grit100 grit - less coarse than 80 grit but should still NOT be used on natural nails only on acrylics80 grit - very coarse and should never be used on the natural nail as it is far too rough! A file this coarse should only be used on artificial nails, but even then proceed with caution."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"Does this work on acrylic nails?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"BFB's Czech Glass Nail Files are suitable for use with both natural and artificial nails, however when filing artificial nails it is recommended that the file is dipped in water before and periodically during use."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"I use the emery board nail files but they wear out quickly. Do your\nglass nail files wear out quickly as well?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"Not at all. Love it. I read some feedbacks stating to be sure to always file in one direction which is pretty standard, but very important for this files use. I don't think you will be disappointed for the price. Will last a lot longer than the emery boards which I also have a large variety supply and will still use for certain types of care."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"I'm a classical guitarist. I bought this file and like it very much for shaping, but does Bona Fide make a file with very fine grit for buffing?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"Thank you for your question! We are glad you have been enjoying your BFB Nail File so far, that is great to hear :) Bona Fide Beauty's Czech Glass Manicure Nail Files are classified as Fine to Medium Grit. It is gentle on the natural nails and is the optimum grit for regular, long-term use. Unfortunately, this is the finest grit we offer in terms of Medium Manicure Nail Files. It's main function is to file and shape the nail. The grit seems to suit the general `bell-curve' of nails, however, if you are finding it too harsh, we recommend wetting the file by dipping it in water or rinsing it, to `dull' it slightly.Also, we offer Baby Nail Files which have a very fine grit:https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01B5VJTW2?th=1Even though these are `Baby Nail Files' they are great for adult use, if you don't mind the cute designs. They also come in protective silver plastic hard cases, so you can easily store one in your Guitar Bag incase you need to fix a jagged nail prior to a gig.You can also investigate a soft buffer block (there are many good quality ones available on Amazon or Walmart) for the purpose of Buffing & Polishing the nail. If you contact us via Amazon.com we can help you with some suggestions :) Please do, we would love to discuss this with your further.Kind Regards, Jess @ BFB."}}]}]}
