I brought frankincense back from mid east, how do I burn it?  do I use charcoal?

Yup. You will want s9me send to put in the bottom. Then put a charcoal brisket on top. Light one corner and wait until the charcoal turns grey. Apply the resin either directly on top of the charcoal for a stronger scent or on the screen above the charcoal for a lighter scent.

Question 2

I am baffled. It looks like you need to use sand in the base, light a charcoal disc and resin on the sand. What is the purpose of the screen?

:) Understand your confusion. Let's clear things up. IF you are using the burner for incense sticks - you put a little sand in the bottom to help hold the sticks up straight. The sticks would be put through the screen and into the sand to hold the sticks up. IF you are burning resin incense you would use the screen to place your charcoal on. Light the charcoal and then pour a small amount of resin incense on top. The incense burner in both manners will catch the ash from either the sticks or the charcoal/resin. Hope that clears it up for you.

Question 3

is this the kind of incense burner where you put the incense directly on the charcoal or on top of the screen?   some of these have a screen that sits just above the charcoal so that the incense more or less vaporizes, and never gets that burny smell at the end.  Does anyone know where a person could get one of those?

Hello, you need the charcoal to make the incense burn, you can place it in the bottom of the (Again SMALL) burner (But even though it is small a "round" of charcoal fits perfect.) and then put the incense on top of it there, or you can take the screen, flip it over (It makes a little curve if you do that) then put the charcoal and the incense on top of it there.  I found that for me, its better just to put it under the screen and inside the burner, because if I have to go somewhere suddenly I can take the whole thing with tongs and dump the charcoal and incense in the toilet to put it out, as I am sure you know Charcoal burns for a long time, and this things gets VERY hot (You can easily burn yourself on it if not careful), and you do not want to leave your house with this going if I was you.  Hope that helps.

What quick starting charcoal is the best to use with the littlest amount of smoke?

unfortunately all the charcoal will have some smoke. It is not a toxic smoke as these charcoal are different than the ones used on an outside grill. We usually recommend either Three Kings or Swift Lite
