Q: is this what is considered an open gear grease?

Not really. It is stringy and tacky but will probably not hold up to open gear applications. Open gear greases are usually black, tacky, made with asphalt and contain solids like moly or graphite. I would recommend our Carter Open Gear Grease. It is also on Amazon. Comes in cartons of 20 tubes.
