Mark Seliger Photographs

An absolutely beautiful book that is fun to go through again and again. There is so much to take in on each page. Whether it is a black and white portrait of Johnny Cash or colorful studio shot of Jerry Seinfeld, Mr. Seliger's amazing talent comes through on each page. It is instantly one of my favorite book of photographs. It is full of inspiration. The book is big and the print quality is beautiful. Other than four pages of text and a four page index that gives the date, location and subject's name, the book is all photos, and almost all portraits. I will be buying a few copies to give as gifts.

This is a magnificent portfolio, printed in Italy on thick paper to the highest standard. The book is sufficiently large that it requires extra consideration for viewing as well as shelving. However, I found a place for it right next to my Annie Leibovitz "Photographs".

I have no idea how I was able to buy this book for the price I did. It's a hardcover, coffee table sized book that is well printed with great reproductions. The work of Mark Seliger is top notch. I knew of his work over the years mostly because of his Rolling Stone magazine shoots. I figured that I'd buy the book and look a little deeper into his work. I was blown away. I am in awe of his ability to come up with interesting ideas that actually have some insight into the person he is photographing, his ability to sell the idea to not only the client and to the celebrity but also that he is able to get the idea past the phalanx of P.R. people, managers, handlers, hangers on and all of the other people whose sole job it is to protect the brand and image of the celebrity by saying no as much as possible. Not only does Mr. Seliger manage this feat but he then manages to connect with the client and deliver terrific, insightful photos ( usually in a 10 to 15 minute shoot). His mastery of both b/w and color is also remarkable and not an easy thing to do. I've been in love with photography and have been shooting for over 40 years (most of them professionally) and I have quite a few photo books. Every once in awhile one comes along that you know that you will keep going back to in order to learn, get motivated or just for the sheer joy of looking at great work. This is one of those books. The only downside to this book is that his work is so good that it got me mad. I actually had to take a walk after reading this book in order to clear my head. I'm a good photographer and I usually "get it", but after seeing this work I know that I need to go back, edit my life work, toss out a hell of a lot of it and perhaps put all of my equipment out on the curb. Hopefully I'll just get motivated and hit the streets. If you like great portrait photography, photography in general, celebrities or you're just starting out and you want to see what terrific photography looks like buy this book.

Great buy. Fantastic book and well worth the wait

A beautiful collection of familiar RS covers and outtakes from cover shoots, as well as other portraits. Very inspiring. I'm impressed by the wide range of styles. The work here is a good reminder to photographers of what's possible if you don't overthink your lighting. I've no idea why the book is marked down 80%, but it is a truly wonderful book. There is one spread in my copy where you can notice a color shift between the two pages, but other than that the book appears flawless. Truly a great addition to your collection.
