Bolivia
I am living in Bolivia, so I wanted to flesh out some of this country’s history by reading this book. I have been to some of the areas Che wandered. I have spoken to people in Samaipata and Vallegrande who experienced this escapade. I don’t think of this man as a hero. He killed a colt because it annoyed him. He caused the deaths of many Bolivians, those who fought him and those who helped him. He never gained followers in Bolivia. Why should they follow a man who invaded their country and caused the death of so many. He is responsible for the deaths of thousands, yet is idolized. What I saw in this book, was 11 months of starving, sick foreign mercenaries fighting over food and wondering aimlessly through the jungle. Not one page seemed heroic. I do recommend this book, because I don’t want people to see him as a hero, but the failed man he was at his death.

A loveable Che
A great read about Che's early and zany travel adventures around South America. He is not usually portrayed with a sense of humor - but this book proves in spades he had one - at least back then. This is a classic well worth reading.

An okay read
This is Che Guevara's last diary before he was captured and executed for his guerilla activities in Bolivia. This book was complied from the notebooks that were found in his backpack after his capture. This book was okay. It is actually a pretty boring diary of them marching through Bolivia - starving and being sick and then finally being captured. The diary covers about a year of their trek through the country. I actually got a lot more out of the beginning and end recaps of the story as well as the "month in review" section of each chapter than I did from the actual journal entries.I know he is seen as a hero, but he did not really come off that way in this book. IT is full of blunders through the countyside, constantly on the move and always on the brink of starvation. I kept waiting for the book to take shape and a real battle to be revealed, but it never happened. When looking for books around Bolivia, almost all recommended reading was about Che Guevara. This is the only one that took place exclusively in Bolivia (his more famous "Motorcycle Diaries covers several countries), so that is why I chose it. But I may keep looking for another Bolivian book in the future.

One for the Ages
"Nevertheless, the late Che remains as one oversold, overrated, revolutionary Marxist-Leninist crackpot."My wifes parents and grandparents lived in Cuba during the ulta-corrupt Batista period. Her grandfather was very prominent in Cuban politics. When Castro won the war and outsted Bastista, her grandfather was very upset. After all, as he said, he (my wifes grandfather) had "spent years paying off all the right people and just when his time had come, the Cuban Revolution thwarted his political ambitions".The entire family then sought refuge in Miami where thousands of ex-Cubans live today.I think that just about sums up why Che and many others decided it was time to knock off the current government.

South America's stuggle
Che's diary helped me understand this real man, not through the eyes of partisanship but from the man himself. If you like reading autobiographical writing and diaries, you will enjoy this.

A tragic read
Having retraced che's last movements through Bolivia, this was an incredible insight to the hardship endured and the tragic loss of an outstanding leader.

The unthinkably hard life of a rebel
Regardless of your political beliefs, if you've ever wondered what it takes in terms of guts, wisdom, and moral dilemmas to successfully build a revolution against tyranny, Che's books will take you right into the rebel's camp in a style of writing that is pleasantly natural and personal, yet pulls no punches about the hardships and horrors, nor makes any excuses for mistakes and actions we might consider ruthless. His diary ends abruptly, of course, because they killed him. It's a strange feeling reading the last entry knowing he was going to die, yet when he wrote it he was still looking ahead to the next defiant encounter with the military.
