Okay, not that kids can’t play with it, but I have a feeling if I had any, they’d never put it down and I’d lose my marbles. I got this as a Christmas gift for my husband and he was excited when he opened the package. Like a little kid almost! He likes to play with it from time to time, but he’s not serious about making music with it. It’s a fun toy! Tbh, I was determined to try and figure out the Star Wars into on it and I came SO CLOSE… just one note off. But yeah, if you gave it to a kid, you’d never hear the end of it. Safer in adult hands. ;)

I’m a little disappointed. I wanted to learn how to play songs on this, but once I realized how the Otamatone works I feel a lot less inclined to learn. I’m pretty sure human touch (pressure?) completes a circuit on the carbon(?) strip and then emits a sound based on that. That’s why placing your finger lower increases the pitch, because placing your finger lower completes the circuit while including less carbon (which is a resistor) as that increases the power and frequency at which the sound plays, increasing the pitch. Now there is a problem with just linearly changing the pitch along the stem, and that is notes aren’t placed linearly on the stem at all, so while some notes higher on the stem have plenty of room for error, notes lower down the stem “are more sensitive than my self esteem.” Also because of this, changing the octave is also not simple and shift notes over again. Bro honestly I should have just bought a flute. Also the thin plastic panel around the strip feels flimsy and I’m worried that it will pop out when my fingernail catches it.
