Number 5 is alive
I have bought other generic building block sets in the past, and it has been a mixed bag. While some are better than others, the reality is that for the most part, you can immediately tell they are not the same quality level as Lego. This is no exception; it still feels less quality. But compared to most I have owned, the quality here is actually pretty good. The pieces feel sturdy and the finished set feels like it can withstand moving it around and posing it. The cell phone-controlled motor is also a super nice addition, it is an incredible good value, comparing it to other building block sets. The instructions could be improved a bit, as they are confusing in several parts, but overall is not a complicated build. The final build is actually very good and sturdy and it really resembles Johnny 5.

Fun to assemble
Fun project. Spent some good quality time with my nephew as we each built one together. He is 12 and I went at his pace which took about 4 hours. Some steps can be a challenge, but definitely doable. Overall, everything operates as it should. We have not tried the app function yet though.

Great kit
I love this kit. For anyone who shares my nostalgia for Johnny 5 from the original movies, this will be a sure hit. I was surprised by how large he was and the functionality for the price is excellent. He has a remote and you can also control its the smartphone app although the app is not very user friendly. If I had to give one bit of critical feedback regarding the kit design, it is that his rear wheels are cosmetic and conceal a ball bearing, rather than swiveling as in the design. Otherwise though, the build does an incredible job of making him look lifelike at this scale, and having a remote controlled version that can actually drive around is very fun. Be aware though, he's not all-terrain at all- due to a lack of suspension he vibrates a lot when moving around, doesn't have a lot of power or stability to get over obstacles, and he's quite slow too. I think of him more as posable display model than a toy, and the play features are just a nice-to-have bonus. If you have those same expectations, he will not disappoint!

It looks good. The build is solid enough for technic lego. It moves pretty well on carpet.
Going to touch on some aspects that other reviews touched on: - It looks real good. It's undeniably Johnny 5. I thought the eyes were a little off, but after looking at some official pics, you see what they were going for. The pupils are a black 1x1, which is a little small but not out of range for what the official Johnny does. It's just a limitation of lego scale. More importantly it doesn't look like an obvious "lego" set. - The tank treads need traction for it to effectively move. You can move it around on a smooth table or surface, but it's going to shake. On carpet or some surface that gives the treads something to grip, it moves much smoother. - The remote is a little weird as the right side of it isn't oriented the way you'd expect. You do get used to it though. Range is good. - The instructions are good *BUT* the light blue vs gray pieces are hard to discern and makes some steps take longer than they should. My advice, look at the entire step and what goes where before assembling the pieces for the step. Sometimes a later picture helps you know what's all light blue and what's gray whereas the early picture did not do as well. - I had a few missing pieces or rather, I had the correct number of pieces, but not the correct pieces. In bag #1, instead of a 1x2 gold tile(what lego calls it), I had a 1x3 flat tile which isn't even a listed piece in the content inventory in the instructions. Also in one of the last bags I had a 1x1 flower petal piece which obviously isn't in that inventory list either. For me those missing/wrong pieces were for very minor aesthetics that nobody but the builder would have noticed, but I saw another review here where someone said they were missing a piece required for a tank tread to move. I did not have more than 1176 pieces though, so no intended extra pieces like Lego usually does. It is lego compatible though, so you can get those missing pieces from lego.com or other brick sites that sell pieces. - Overall build is solid enough and what I expected for a technic lego style set. Also has a decent weight to it. I wouldn't buy this for a child who isn't ready for technic lego though as it's a different style of building compared to normal lego sets. I want to give it 5 stars because it's doing exactly what I wanted it to do, but there are some things buyers should be aware before diving in. I bought pieces off lego.com to cure my OCD for the few missing pieces. Price of the set is very fair for what is offered.

Johnny 5 is not alive :(
I love this movie from the 80's and I got my boys to love it as well. My one son loves Johnny 5. I was so excited to get this. Put it together, there were missing parts, one of the motors didn't work. I waited to open it after the return date since it was going to be a birthday gift. Wast of money.

Johnny 5 is a live... Lego missed out on this one
Very nice kit. No missing parts, the instructions were mostly clear. If you love the movie Short Circuit and Johnny Number 5 you would love this build. More of a display then a RC...parts fall off. I bought for the size.
