Beaks!

Great pictures and information
Beautiful illustrations. Information provided is fun and educational. Each bird has its one page so the book can be read through at once or used as a reference reading only one bird species at a time. The comparative anatomy of the beak is easily described and therefore understood. Very pleased for a read aloud! (Not an early reader book)

Super interesting and great pictures!
My 3.5yr old is obsessed with birds and we have lots of bird species books. This is one of the few more general books we have and it's my favorite. It's long so we don't read the whole thing at once, but I love how it talks about the different types of beaks in a fun way.the pictures are gorgeous too!

Not the best natural selection for Christian schools
I teach K-2 in a Christian school with an Outdoor Education emphasis. I was looking forward to using this book in a bird study, but it has more than the usual reference to evolution. There are two 2-page spreads at the end about evolution and natural selection. I can possibly skip those during read-aloud or use it to inform my students about the theory of evolution. Still, had I known, I would not have purchased it. A little awkward to use in. Christian School. Otherwise a beautiful book.

Great introduction to adaptations
I bought this book in anticipation of teaching the NGSS for first grade. I plan to pair this book with a discovery lab using different prongs, tweezers, scoops, etc to mimic birds getting food. The book has beautiful paper collage & watercolor illustrations with simple bold text that gives an overlying statement for each page. For example, "heavy beaks crush" or "long beaks probe." Each page also includes a paragraph in smaller type with additional information on how the beak is used or something special about the each beak (change color, shedding, etc). A very versatile and interesting book!

A wonderful pictorial and verbal explanation of evolution in birds' beaks
A wonderful pictorial and verbal explanation of evolution in birds' beaks. The illustrations are breathtaking. I love the 3-d nature of the birds. The explanations about each bird and its niche are useful for ranges in age from 5 to second grade. I think that adults can and should learn from it as well. I love Sneed Collard's books!

Excellent book with terrific illustrations!
We absolutely adore this book. It is educational and the imagery of the birds is wonderful. I have such great admiration for all of Robin Brickman's work. What a phenomenal talent!

Great Learning Tool
This is used as a bird food explanation at our local nature center for children. It has birds from our area in SoCal as well as other diverse bird populations world wide. I love that the beak is adapted to the food wherever the bird lives. It is explained simply but completely at a young level with brightly colored, faux torn paper illustrations.
