In an age of solid state storage, this mechanical unit is a must
TLDR: A reliable mechanical HDD unit, purposed for backup of files held on SSD.I've a PC adorned with NVME SSDs, similarly my wife has a PC with SATA SSDs. That is, everything we do day-to-day is on solid state storage. I'm fortunate enough to also have a setup where my work is automatically synchronised to a Synology NAS, which in turn is backed up to the cloud overnight. I feel pretty confident and safe when it comes to data backup. My wife on the other hand, who is less confident technically, has no such backup. Instead she tends to backup all her important files onto USB thumb drives. With the best will in the world, these are still solid state storage - and difficult to organise, having at least 5 of these drives floating around at any time. This is where this Toshiba unit comes in. Essentially it is a consolidated backup unit for my wife to use, which she can, as it just appears as a large 'thumb' drive in her mind. It's not just the large capacity that's a bonus, it also the fact it's mechanical. I love SSDs, their speed and reliability is fantastic, but degradation is a concern. Unlike mechanical units which give fair warning of degradation as they age, solid state units are pretty much at the mercy of their firmware implementation. Some SSDs will revert to 'read-only' mode as they fault, some just stop working. The ideal would be to have backup both on different media types and different geographic locations, but this gets her halfway there.

Extra storage take files with you
I bought this ages ago to add storage to the home desktop and annoying others that I used all the disk space. I just bought it plugged it in and it required no setup, it just worked. Compact so I can take it away and plug into laptop with USB 2 connection (check as this may be different on newer models). This just worked too. Loads of disc space. I keep lots of photos on it, documents etc. Great kit.

Simple, efficient, quiet and fast!
Bought for my wife, to allow her to transfer large volumes of photos, video and other media, in order to free up capacity on her laptop.I have numerous storage drives from big brand names, which are all more bulky than this neat Toshiba 2TB unit.In addition, the CANVIO basic runs very quietly, with little or no sign of getting hot.The capacity is slightly less than stated, due to preloaded information and instruction files, but these are useful to have. The write speed is impressive, with no lag and equally, the recall speed for files is just as impressive. We are completely happy with this purchase so far and suspect this unit will provide good service for many years.

Good for desktop use
Extremely good value for money and very small but the trade off is that I wouldn't use this for anything other than desk top and certainly wouldn't like to trust important data to if I was carrying it around in my pocket. I doesn't inspire me to believe that anything other than total loss would ensue if you walloped this by accident or dropped it. Maybe if you're a very careful person that never makes a mistake or is in any way a little clumsy from time to time I would trust it to carry non-essential data inside a laptop bag inside another padded bag. As I'm non of these things then I'll stick to the other ones I use for transit that have a DoD impact rating,Having said that it really is fast and small and I've never had an issue at all but never left my desk top or drawer.

Reliable Storage
I love these external drives. I have been using them for years with various different capacities from 500GB to 2TB. They are low cost, but they're not cheap: they are well engineered and I have never had a single problem with any of these drives in nearly 10 years of using them.Using a USB 3.x socket also gives you solid transfer rates for large amounts of data.I would highly recommend them for storing whatever data you want to hold on to, long term.
