Endurance: An Epic of Polar Adventure Paperback – 26 Sept. 2023

Shackleton has been a hero to me since my teens.I read & reread this & other eye witness accounts.When we moved home & downsized many of our books had to go to charity shops.This is a superb record of the journey.The beauty of Kindle is that an old ( also new) book can come to mind & be ready to read at once.This book is well written,not at all sensationalist,a straight honest account.

An excellent read but I have read very similar versions of this momentous journey but well worth reading

Treat this book like Homer - a narrative from a totally different era, but so long ago culturally. The book’s climax is the 800 mile escape through nearly continuous gales in a 21 foot boat from Elephant Island to South Georgia. Dominant themes include the selfless and inspiring leadership given by Shackleton, and the intense bond of friendship between him and Worsley. If you can forgive some of the ubiquitous anachronisms of a different age, Worsley emerges as a bold seaman of outstanding genius in his craft, courageous in war and peace, and with an endless appetite for the many seafaring and other adventures described. Worsley went to sea as a child of 15, and was still serving during the second world war in his seventies, until the authorities discovered he had lied about his age. Splendid chap; but from a different age. Well written breezy narrative.

Excellent book with lots of detail should be compulsory reading for today’s youngsters.

Really enjoyed this book after hearing of the Endurance on the news. Ideal way of finding the story behind wreck. Written incredibly well.

After reading this account of survival under extreme conditions with basic equipment, I cannot but wonder how they survived and what strength of character each man had that enabled him to endure. The leadership and kinship portrayed was amazing. I don't think such a journey will ever happen again.
