Can these berries be crushed to make cold sumac tea?

I've never made sumac tea. I do however grind them in a spice mill for other applications and they are wonderful. Certainly maintain their freshness better whole.

Are these "smooth sumac" berries?

No, this is "rhus coriaria" which is commonly called "Sicilian sumac". Smooth sumac would be "rhus glabra", I don't know about the details but it must be different than this berries.
