The Expanse: Origins

Worth It For A Hardcore Fan
This collection of origin stories is worth it for Amos' chapter alone. I've read every novel and novella, and it still provided new and interesting context that neither the books nor the short stories contained. Miller, Alex, and Naomi's are good too. Holden's doesn't really have much to offer that we didn't already know. The art is serviceable if not extraordinary. Do not read if you're faint of heart though, as some of this content can get pretty pitch black.

Not really worth buying
If I hadn't read the first 6 books already, this might have seemed a little more interesting. Graphics aren't too great, and the content adds very little to what is already revealed in the books.

For people who are already fans
This is a collection of comics meant to fill in some character backstory for the TV show. Stories are by James SA Corey - the author team who wrote the original Expanse books - along with Georgia Lee and Hallie Lambert - who've written scripts for the Expanse TV show. I expect this pedigree makes it as close to canon as one can get.The paperback collects five comics, one focused on each character. If you've already read the books, then the backstories of Holden, Naomi, and Miller are already pretty well-established, and there's not much new here. Amos' childhood is even darker than I expected, although the books did hint at it.The only really new bit concerns Alex. His character is younger on the TV show than in the books, so they've created a new storyline to clarify why he left Mars. For fans who want more backstory, it's worth it.

Good collection
Favorite Story“Naomi Nagata” by Georgia Lee (illustrated by Huang Danlan): This isn’t Naomi’s “origin story,” which is covered very well in the books themselves. Instead, it shows us the first introduction between Naomi and Amos prior to the events of the books/television show. I loved the growth shown by both characters even in such short, spare scenes.Story I’d Like to See Expanded“Josephus Miller” by Hallie Lambert (illustrated by Huang Danlan): Miller (and his hat) is one of my favorite character arcs in this series, so it was fun to get more of his background. Despite both being Belters, he and Naomi both had very different early lives. I wish we’d seen more of that in this story, rather than through the lens of adult Miller. Hopefully Corey gives us at least a novella about this at some point.

More 'Expanse?' Yes, please!
'The Expanse: Origins' doesn't tread a lot of new ground for those who have read the books or seen the show-- we've already been given the rough outlines of the crew's backstories, and many of the events in this comic have already been telegraphed to fans. That doesn't mean that 'The Expanse: Origins' isn't a fun read, anyway. While we already know the primary story arcs of the crew's personal histories, many the specific scenes depicted in this title were only broadly suggested in the books and series, and 'The Expanse: Origins' provides a little additional context.Required reading? No. 'The Expanse: Origins' can safely be skipped if you're already up to speed on the events which shaped the character of Jim. Alex, Naomi. Amos. and Detective Miller. But if you enjoy these characters and want to get a glimpse of who they were before they became the crew of the Roci, 'The Expanse: Origins' is probably worth looking at anyway.

Awesome story, awesome TV series but I will never choose this format again.
I’m sure it’s a great story but difficult to manipulate on my iPhone 8 Plus. I didn’t realize it was a comic as I just wanted to read text, my fault I didn’t understand the format when purchasingProblem is, you must constantly zoom andmove the screen to read the bubbles and see the pictures but, the screen will randomly zoom and/or move on it’s own, sometimes to a different page. I’m current on the show and wanted to read the prequels and short stories before I start the book series.I’ll stick to paperbacks and the TV show next time.

Sadly Disappointing
Like many people who will arrive at this page, I discovered Expanse through the television show and then "ate up" the regular books and came here looking for more content. It was interesting to learn some of the back stories, but the limits of the medium cause the narrative to be less rich than the books. And the artwork was okay at best. In the end, I'm not sure it was worth my time to read, let alone spend $10. If you can find a copy in a library, maybe take a look, but I don't think it's worth buying. And this is from a fanboy -- I just 3D printed a Rocinante.

It's a graphic novel
I really enjoyed it.A good way to get the background on Miller, Holden, Naomi, Amos and Alex. Some of the things you may already know if you have read until book 7. However, some of the past isn't known.

Interesting and sad.
I was apprehensive about the artwork having seen a few examples, but having read it, feel vindicated to have tried it out. On the whole it fleshes out the characters and reminds us of how tough it is for them to choose their paths that lead to an incredible team. I very much enjoyed it, especially in graphic form.

A must for fans
Firstly really great art work. This is a great companion book for fans of the show, and the books. For anyone starting out on the show/books this is a good starting point.
