China explained
This is a most important and illuminating book. It is also delightfully written. Even Keyu Jin’s easy style cannot make the chapter on international monetary policy explicable, for me at least, but the rest of the book is wonderful, an antidote to the kind of rhetoric of our Trumpian times.

Every Western politician should read
Excellent book. I’ve lived in China and Taiwan for over ten years and taught economics for 5 years in a Taiwanese high school in Kunshan, known locally as ‘Little Taiwan.’ Many of the Taiwanese businesses have left post-Covid. In my opinion, China essentially followed the growth model of the Asian Tiger economies which when applied to a much larger population has produced spectacular results. I’m currently in Shenzhen and it’s hard not to be impressed by the living quality here. All taxis are BYD EV’s, all scooters are electric and the air quality is better than Taichung, Taiwan where I live. A big change from when I first came to China in 2013. When you live in China, it’s hard not to be sanguine about its long term prosperity. My students used to joke that if they were weak at maths they would sit A Level which is not difficult for Chinese students!

Exceptional
Keyu gives a good understanding of China. She explains China's economic growth not just by personal motivation, relaxation of idelogy's grip but factors in society's culture built in 1000s of years.Great book in understanding China's astounding economic growth. Keyu also gives good indicators how the West should react. I particularly liked western and eastern cultures have a lot to learn from one another.

A useful perspective on China. Well worth reading.I almost didn't buy it when I saw it was recommended by Tony Blair

Worth a read
It’s always difficult trying to explain a country as vast and complex as China to an audience with varied level of existing knowledge. The author has done a fairly good job at giving an overview.I deducted one star because I feel that some geopolitically sensitive issues have been sidestepped (understandably, given the author’s position), and some important topics are barely touched, eg, when discussing China’s role in the global financial system, the topic of BRICS currency wasn’t even mentioned.Overall, well worth a read.

A Good, Balanced View
An excellent summary, written by someone with a suitable background to allow comparisons. It highlights the fact that there are different approaches possible, other than the American model.Sure China has a chequered history in many respects, but which country doesn't?And, if it veers sometimes towards a positive view on China, it's about time at least one book did.
