IS THE LUBRICANT A SOLID GREASE?

Not sure what you mean by "solid". Its consistency is that of tooth paste. I use it like a glue to hold large canister gaskets in place when replacing filters in potable water systems. Hope this helps some.

Will it break down plastic?

It is fine with plastic and metal parts and will not break them down.
