Q: Do I need to purchase something else with this or will this work for 2 people?

The relevant question isn't the number of people but the number of devices and the area it can serve. One constraint is that it only has 3 ports for wired devices (plus one Internet facing port). But if most of your devices are wireless, it's not a problem. Wireless signal is strong and covers an area that's at least adequate for this level of device (especially given relatively low price). In my short experience it had no trouble serving a house with about 50 devices and maintaining bandwidth close to the maximum my Internet plan provides. This is a router so you'll still need a cable modem (or another Internet gateway, depending on your mode of accessing Internet).

Q: Backward compatibility with 802.11n or g devices?

The specifications say IEEE 802.11ax/n/b/g 2.4 GHz. I have not found anything in my collection of old junk it has been unable to connect with.

Q: How to connect a vpn?

Yes but when I got it you had to update the firmware from the website. There is a VPN fixed version. I'm not sure if that version now auto updates.
