In The Night Kitchen

Great book! A classic.
I bought this book as I vividly remember the story and artwork from when I was a child at school. As soon as I opened the pages, the memories came flooding back! This story is a dreamlike adventure with a quirky tale and great illustration. I now read this story to my little boy and I hope he will have fond memories of it into adulthood. I can close my eyes and see the classroom with the reading corner with full bookshelves and beanbags to sit on, sitting beside the cast iron old school radiator on the wall looking out of the window at the cold autumnal scene outside. i remember giggling at some of the scenes on the pages and you will have to get the book to understand what i mean :-)

much giggling!
I remember this from when I was a little girl in the early 70s.... but only after seing it here did I recall its title and author! I now have a copy for my little girl. We giggled as youngsters at the naked little boy in the story (always a source of much hilarity for kiddies!) so I can't wait for my little one to read it herself. The story is so bizarre and imaginative, it must have come from a dream! Absolutely wonderful. Pity it's not a board book, though, as my toddler would probably want to eat it...

Fantastical and perfect
I remember this book from a nursery I attended when I was very young, and have just bought it for my 21 month old toddler because I loved it so much, even though I never owned it. It's just the wonderful night time dreamscape journey I remember. The toddler loves it too, and asks for it again and again, saying 'Mickey!', 'Dough!' and 'big milk bottle!' It's funny seeing the confused reactions of some of the reviewers, especially the one startled by the nudity. Children's books these days can be so prosaic and educational, they probably don't know what the lesson is here.

Beautiful illustrations - a classic
Less well known than Where the Wild Things Are but almost as good. Wonderful illustrations and dreamlike story. I read somewhere that it has been banned from various American libraries due to the nudity of Mickey in some of the pictures. Which just goes to show how bonkers and puritanical Americans can be. My daughter loves it, but I think I love it more.

My wife's favorite Sendak book – mine is Where the Wild Things Are
OK, Sendak is genius. Given. But I can't give In The Night Kitchen a 5-star rating – because that would put it on par with my favourite picture book from my childhood – Where The Wild Things Are.I'll have to ask my wife one day why she prefers In The Night Kitchen. And in a year or so of several readings of both books, I'll ask my daughter which she prefers, in order to ascertain who she's most like – me or my wife.

brought for my daughter
Not as well known as Where the Wild Things Are but every bit as wonderful and magical with utterly beautiful illustrations. I remember being read this book as a child by my dad so I brought if for my daughter who loved it every bit as much as I do. So nice to read childrens books where the illustrations are like wonderful works of art.

Wonderful bookd
My kids loved both books. They are surreal and illustrations are superb. There was a problem getting where the wild beasts are from the publishets in 1980s but here we are with great kids books.
