I love this sketchbook for my gouache painting.

Lovely quality, can't fault it!

This is an interesting pad- it's spiral bound, but also gummed on the other three sides (you will need to use a blade or paper scorer to remove the sheets of paper from the pad or flip to the next page), so it lies flat as you work on it. So a block of mixed media paper with a spiral binding.The paper itself is surprisingly nice. It does handle wet and dry media beautifully- a little bit of rippling and swelling with watered down gouache (to watercolor consistency). I would recommend this for a heavier application of a thicker gouache, as it comes out of the tube, as opposed to using gouache like watercolor. Granulating watercolor works okay- not as good as a textured cotton paper properly sized for watercolor, and the pigment particles do tend to leave very hard edges as opposed to a proper watercolor paper. Gouache, even watered down, looks vibrant and beautiful on this paper- the color of the paper is a true white, but NOT cool toned.The texture of the paper is AMAZING for color pencil and straight pencil-over-pencil blending. I was shocked at how good it performed for that, and I am going to order another one of these (or two...) specifically for color pencil work. I love how the gummed down edges hold the paper flat and smooth while working with pencils on it. The colors popped and blended like a dream on this paper- the tooth is just right for solvent-free blending.So this is a true mixed media paper, gummed on three sides, good tooth and color. Definitely a contender for those find the XL pads not quite right for the work they do.

Paper seems to thin so I doubt it's 160 lb. The sketchbook I received was not properly cut with pages being stuck together, some ripping apart when being pried open. Aside from that it took a month or so to arrive. Will be steering clear of this brand.

This paper is not thickEnough for paints…buckles with water addedI recommend a different one for gouache

I know goache doesn’t require the same thickness as watercolor paper, but these pages are too thin for my preference. In part because I do so,etimes use watercolor and goache so some techniques I use are more wet

I have the HIMI gouache 48 color paint set, so when I saw this pad I didn't think twice about ordering it. The paints are so impressive, and the paper seemed like a perfect compliment.The paints apply beautifully on the paper, and surprisingly the paper is thinner than regular watercolor paper, but does not curl thanks to the glue coating they use.So as mentioned, the pages are attached, but are really easy to separate. They suggest using a palette knife, but I did so just gently using my nails to separate, then pulling apart. A metal ruler or letter opener would also work easily.For me, the size is perfect and 50 sheets will last me a while.The paper works well for different media, not only gouache. I have used acrylic markers and colored pencils which work well too. But this was just to test the paper. I am definitely using this with my HIMI paints only as the gouache seems to look and work amazingly on this pad compared to other paper. This is an excellent price for quality if you paint with gouache.

I don't have any gouache-specific paper, so I decided to try this out. It holds paint and the water pretty well(I only have a photo of some swatches I tried out).The pages are in a block, so they are nice and tightly wrapped. I've had almost zero warping. You have to use a palette knife to separate the pages. I also have really enjoyed the square shape, thought I never usually work in this type of sketch book. It's perfect to start learning gouache!
