I live in the desert and field mice tend to crawl into the engine area and nibble on the wires. I learned the hard way that most automotive wire has soy in it to increase flexibility. Well, that explains why the mice eat the wires. I tried the peppermint and other spices to deter them. That NEVER worked. The flashing strobe device attached to the car's battery (even the style with the sonic beep) reduced my trips to the mechanic, but even with two of those in my engine compartment I still had problems. And, that style would kill my battery after a week if I didn't use the car. Sheesh!! The ONLY device that... so far... has worked are these solar string lights. I wrap them around my car each night. They have been 100% successful at keeping the rats away. I had success with them for 3 years now. But, don't let that mislead you. String lights work well, but the you'll get about 8 months use out each set you buy cause they die. I've bought about six different seller's fairy lights over the years and they all eventually break in the same location. It appears the manufacturer(s) is careful to make the connection from the 4ft wire leading out of the tiny solar panel extra extra fragile where it connects to the tube lights. Since I wrap 40ft of fairy light around my car each night and remove it each morning, that movement stresses the fragile connection and breaks it. I was able to resolder the break one time, but the other times its requires the purchase of an entirely new string light. The break repeatedly occurs where the lead wire connects to the start of the tube lights,... very clever indeed!. So, I tend to anchor the start of the tube lights with a rock near the right front tire and walk the rest of it around my car each night. (The rock inhibits flexing the wire at that critical area). Even with caution I can only get about 8 months to a year out of it. One way or the other, when the string light dies I'm glad to replace it cause it's the ONLY solution I have found that, so far, is 100% effective at keeping those critters from eating my cars' wiring!! :) BTW, there are many sellers of these string lights, but they all appear to be the same design. As such, be aware that they all use an AA style rechargeable battery within the tiny solar charger (you'll need a jeweler's Phillips screwdriver to open it). As I recall, the energy storage capacity is minimal (such as 600mAh). Meaning the lights may not blink all night. You can replace that battery with ANY higher capacity AA rechargeable battery. If so, look for the battery's mAh value and get the highest number, anything upwards of 2800mAh will last 12 hours or so. Lastly, you can save a few bucks if you buy the fairy lights WITHOUT the vinyl tube. But, they won't last as long and they tend to snarl and knot-up when you move them. Get the tube-style (anyone's tube style, they're all the same). It last longer and are much easier to use.

I like this product. Good quality. The only thing I didn't like was the hanging hooks. They were to cumbersome so I just used command strips. It's sets the perfect ambiance for our basement theatre room.
