Excellent introduction to a complex historic period.
A bit too bright and shining depictions of what most people would see as horrible battles, hand to hand fighting with swords, spears etc., sober enough commentary, lots of details for the interested reader, highly recommended.

Really interesting philosophical aspects.
I really loved the two military philosophies. The barbarians are not methodical, but with them it is more about culture, following your king. For the Romans it is more about winning and being civilized.

Defending the edges of empire...
During the reign of Marcus Aurelius, Germanic tribes from beyond the Danube began to press against the borders of the Roman Empire. In a series of campaigns, the fading Roman Legions, led by Marcus Aurelius, struggled to contain the invaders. This new Osprey Combat Series book details that encounter. The author makes full admission of the sketchy nature of the historical record before recounting three combats that determined the outcome of the campaign. The author has drawn heavily on the available sources, and on a decent amount of common sense, to describe the outcomes. The text includes lots of depictions of period monumental art and surviving artifacts, along with some very useful illustrations and battle diagrams. Well recommended to students of the Roman Empire.
