So it runs reddish purple when introduced to water, as it SHOULD if it's real black/purple rice. Now, there are different grades of black rice and some people ONLY call it black rice when it's an extremely high grade. It’s exactly what black rice should be. Lots of color good flavor expect to see your water, turn purple that’s what it’s supposed to do… fresh beets do the same thing!

The first container I got was cracked and I was uncomfortable using the rice spilled in the bag, due to possible shards. Second container was intact and product was great! The nutty, earthy taste is phenomenal, compared to bland white or jasmine rice. With all racial overtones removed, once you go black (for rice), you'll never go back (to plain). Very tasty!!

Absolutely love this rice: beautiful purplish-black color adds drama to any dish it is served with and it has an elusive earthy taste, plus a texture that reminds me of sticky rice. Totally addictive.My current favorite dish is rice pudding made with almond milk and this rice, thickened with an egg and spiced with cinnamon, vanilla bean, freshly ground nutmeg and maple syrup. Breakfast heaven!

The jar is so much small than their other products. I saw those reviews stating that - and I only half believed them. But it had a 30% discount so I tried it. The rice might have some coloring added. The water turned brownish red instantly. It tasted fine, but not so much better than other Rice select products that have brown and red rices. It looks cooler in the jar than it does in the pan or on the plate. No special textures such as the Texmati rice that has brown, black, red and white rices.

UPDATE: I have since switched to Lotus Foods 11 lb bag of Black Rice because it is almost the same price and I get a lot more rice. It is also a good product.It was my first time eating black rice, and it certainly felt a lot more nutritious and healthier eating it than the normal white jasmine rice that I eat and buy (that some would say is not true jasmine rice as it is not true Thai rice).When I cooked it in the rice pot, the water boiled over and made a mess. So I later used my Instant Pot to cook it instead, and there was no mess.I used two cups of water for every cup of dry black rice.Tastes good and is healthy. I ordered this brand because it looks like a responsible brand that doesn't ship rice with bug infestations in it. You can see the contents of the rice through the clear plastic container. I will keep my eyes peeled for cheaper black rice, but there is a good chance I will order this brand again because the quality is good and the price is reasonable compared to other black rice brands.
