Convert or die!
Writer-Director David Twohy created a great anti-hero character with Riddick when he made the successful 'creature feature' Pitch Black. A sequel was inevitable but it took an entirely different route and as a result wasn't as popular, yet the epic Chronicles has more style and ideas than all of the new Star Wars pictures put together.Focusing more on the universe of Riddick rather than Riddick himself Chronicles is huge in terms of story, special effects, action etc. completely detached from anything seen in Pitch Black. Originally intended as the first part of a trilogy Chronicles places the character of Riddick in the middle of a massive storyline, which probably alienated many viewers expecting just another sci-fi/horror/monster movie like Pitch Black. The movie introduces us to the race of humanoids known as the Necromongers who are searching for something called the 'Underverse' conquering and enslaving numerous worlds as they go. The only thing according to prophecy that can stop the Necromongers is a Furyan, a race who are all but extinct - Riddick soon discovers he is the Furyan of the prophecy.Vin Diesel is brilliant in his signature role and clearly enjoys playing Riddick and the supporting cast is just as good. The under-rated Karl Urban is always superb, there's the gorgeous and devilish Thandie Newton, Colm Feore as the supernatural leader of the Necromongers and there's even a small role for Dame Judi Dench. The production and visual designs are stunning and at times breathtaking as the scale of them is so huge, it is very reminiscent of David Lynch's Dune. There are some amazing and exciting set-pieces, the invasion of the Necromongers is a particular highlight, as is the prison escape by Riddick and the subsequent escape across the planet's surface, which is gradually being incinerated by the sun.I think Chronicles is a seriously under-rated movie and always defend its corner from critics and the Director's Cut greatly improves the theatrical version by adding scenes that explore Riddick's background as a Furyan. With great characters, impressive visuals and original action set-pieces it is one of the most imaginative, stylish, original and exciting science-fiction films - I can't wait for the other planned instalments! The Blu-Ray version of Chronicles is nothing short of spectacular and if you're a fan of the movie I highly recommend it, however as another reviewer has pointed out, the extras are basically lifted from the DVD version and it would have been nice to see something new, but it's worth it just for the picture and sound quality alone.I also highly recommend the animated short Dark Fury by Peter Chung which acts as a great bridging episode between Pitch Black and Chronicles.

Outrun the Sun!
Hi, Director David Twohy and Producer/Star Vin Diesel seized upon the opportunity to take the character of Richard B. Riddick onto a new planet to see how he could fare in a stand-alone story after Pitch Black was re-constituted as The Hobbit to the Chronicles of Riddick's Fellowship. Originally David Twohy delivered 3 leather bound scripts to Universal and asked them to support the trilogy, this was the first of them. After arriving on Helion Prime after a trip to Ice World UV6 Riddick evades bounty hunters to arrive on the new world just as the Necromongers arrive an attempt to replenish their ranks after sweeping through the system on a religious crusade, to convert or die, on their journey to the underverse. Riddick turns up at the same location to investigate what's happening and hitches a ride to Crematoria, meeting Kyra from the first film. After escaping from there Riddick takes on the Grand Marshall of the Necromongers, sworn to wipe out the Furyans after he foresaw his own demise at the hands of one of the species. The stage is set for a face-off between Riddick and the Grand Marshall, whilst he has to contend with his own internal power struggle with the ambitious Lord Vaako (Karl Urban) who wants to seize the throne for himself. Though this movie was not very successful at the box office, there is still much to like about this ambitious $100 million production which bridges the movies Pitch Black, Dark Fury and the 3rd Riddick film. It is very detailed, great fun and features an interesting array of characters. The extras are plentiful, and Vin shows he is a good sport during a set tour. Worth adding to your collection.

Pretty potent for a Diesel
Having just bought the most recent film in the trilogy (simply called Riddick) I felt it was long overdue to upgrade the rest of the films in this franchise to Blu-ray.When I found out that there was going to be a sequel to Pitch Black , I couldn't be happier. Even better , both Vin Diesel and director David Twohy were back in the saddle , so how could it possibly go wrong ?For me , absolutely nothing ! It was excellent ! A thoroughly enjoyable popcorn sci-fi/action movie , but then I read the scathing reviews on how bad it was (mainly because there were no monsters to stab at) but I truly disagree as this just opened up the whole Riddick universe and makes the trilogy far more interesting than just a "Hack & Slash" series of movies.Don't get me wrong , I'll take toothy monsters over an invading army any day , but I'm glad they didn't just rehash the same story as Pitch Black by using any excuse for Riddick to see in the dark , which was barely touched on in this film and the only thing that bothered me about this was the PG:13 rating it got compared to the R-rated Pitch Black , so you knew it was going to be a softer affair.Even though the third instalment isn't a complete rip off of the first one , there is a lot of elements from it that doesn't quite make that film original... Still , very enjoyable enough for me to buy it , although I did hope that bounty hunter ,Toombs (played by Nick Chinlund) would have returned or had some kind of spin off movie of his own as I found him quite an enjoyable character... As slimy as he was..Visually this Blu-ray is superb , flawless , excellent , absolutely top notch and couldn't be happier with the picture quality. The same can be said for the 5.1 DTS master audio which really does test your AV receiver to the absolute max.As for the extras , like Pitch Black there's nothing really to shout about from what you got on DVD.There is a picture-in-picture behind the scenes feature that you now get along with a couple of other additions (U-Control for e.g.) but for £7 this is excellent value and very worthy of an upgrade.
