The Exile: An Outlander Graphic Novel

Just my view..... may spoil it for some people.
This is a fabulous book but is far from worth £15 (£8/9 maybe) it took me no time at all to get through it and although it does tell Jamie's side of the story - but it is lacking quite a bit - like for example why Jamie decided to go after Claire when they were ambushed by the British and she walked off, you can guess that he has some kind of feeling for her as she has just reset his arm but it still doesn't explain much. It also does not explain why he does not want to see her while they are back at Leoch. There is also nothing about what he was thinking when he took the beating in the hall (I know that it explains it afterwards but still, you feel that it warrants more). It doesn't give you much at the stables just before he pledges his oath either but if he is beginning to fall for Claire and she literally falls into his lap he seems all too keen to get her back, it doesn't explain to you why - yes half the clan would be after he by morning but she could have spent a few more moments with him at the stables.... just talking or reassuring her that she is safe or something. There is no explanation as to how he feels when he learns that Claire is coming on the road with them and maybe what he thinks when he learns that she is going to see Randall... and then suddenly he wants her! And what is whispered to Jamie to make his eyes widen like an owls?? There is no reference to what he thinks when he sees her in her wedding dress although you do get the idea that Claire is impressed with him :) Suddenly he is so deeply in love with her... it is a bit of a jump and yes I get that we are meant to use our imagination to fill in the gaps but a novel with as many words as a children's book, they could have given us a bit more.... And then why he suddenly thinks she should go back to her previous life.... and when she chooses him, why isn't there more explaining that? They are just my grievances, everybody's will be different and I am sure there are much more imaginative readers than me. The work done by Hoang Nguyen is beautifully depicted, if a bit odd at times. And although it doesn't sound like it, I really did enjoy it. I would certainly recommend it, if you could get it for a bit cheaper :)

OUTLANDER but not as you know it
8i was very unsure what to expect from the based on other reviews but I have to admit I really like it. Written more from Murtagh's point of view, yes it sets up Outlander from Jamie arriving back in Scotland up to heading off to Lallybroch and it is highly condensed at it is a graphic novel (comic format), but I loved the other plot lines that as a reader of the novels and viewer of the series y2k don't see going on such as a new traveller and near miss that even Claire is not aware of. Nice to see Jamie and Murtagh pre wedding thoghts and actions. The art; I'm biased I like 80s comic art, thi reminded me of that why has Jamie got a mullet, Claire's Elvira style bustline.... hilarious. The is a foreword and after thought by Diana Gabldon wish addresses the art and such which I found interesting, including her thoughts on the ever increasing Claire Lara Croft boobage, but also a brief section on tartan history. It's weird and beautiful. Not for everyone, but personally I love Red Jamie McMullet and Claire Kate Bush Croft. I'd recommend it to fans of all that is OUTLANDER.Even if they look like they're about to go into a version of the video of take on Me by Aha (Yep, I'm THAT old).

A glossy comic book companion to the series
It is a nice addition to all the tomes of written word about Jamie and Claire; you get the chance to see the characters you've read about, their clothing, their horses and the story's scenery. I agree with previous reviewers that some male characters look very much alike from one drawing to another, making it difficult to follow the story; and I also agree that Claire looks a bit ethereal for a strong, feisty and determined person that the books describe. And what's with the comedy breasts? Also, if this is supposed to be Jamie's version of the story, why does it only cover the first book? Has he nothing to say about the rest of it? As a recompense, the book ends with some amusing stories from Diana Gabaldon. It is beautifully crafted, though I would have liked the pages to be numbered, so that I know that the story is told in a chronological order.Recommended for die-hard fans of Jamie and Claire.

My views on The Exile
I enjoyed the book as an adjunct to the other Outlander novels and as an item of interest in its own right - graphic novels for adults are pretty unusual after all.It was interesting to go back to the beginning of the saga, seeing it from another viewpoint.I was, however, disappointed in the graphics. I thought them too harsh, too angular and lacking in any Scottish flavour - they have a slightly exotic air about them which does not really fit the story. Also, some of the faces are so similar it is difficult to differentiate between them.I think also, too many liberties have been taken with Claire - her pictures verge on charicature. That is why I decided on a four rather than five star rating.

She's not bad, she's just drawn that way.....
The book was great, innovative storyline, great storytelling skills. The graphic novel is a little different. For a start it's written from the point of view of one of the other main characters and this takes a bit of getting used to; some of the things included don't match the original book at all.Oh, and her breasts, although in the book they were described as ample, in the graphic they start out as ample and end up so large that I'm amazed she can stand upright without toppling over and nailing herself to the floor with her large and very obvious nipples. Maybe this is because it was drawn by a guy and he's let his fertile imagination run away with him. And someone may want to break it to him that the bigger they are the further they can drop, especially when you don't wear a bra.
