The Complete Guide to Hunting, Butchering, and Cooking Wild Game, Volume 1: Big Game

Great book made for the American market not our English one. Good info concise to the point small sections that give a good grounding. Got this one becasue a friend of mine bought me the other which is equally excellent.

Being from the UK I am limited to small game hunting, however I purchased both books in the series. I'm glad I did. They are a fascinating read and Steven has done an excellent job on putting them together. Hopefully one day I can put the knowledge to good use and tackle some larger game and cook up some great food.

Great book, does damage real easy it seems.First package the book was pretty beat up, replacement arrived the following day in great condition

Fantastic book full of great info and recipes, well written and fun.

I bought and watched a video from another person that was a great beginner's tool. Having that base helped me understand some things better when I went thru this book. A LOT of great info in here, and I found it well-organized and presented, too. From gear to prep info, on to various animal species (and I felt the amount of species included was quite large), then butchering and cooking. There was a lot of actual hunting info, like stands and blinds and various weapon types, and traits of the various animals covered. It also covers things like licenses and legal differences between state laws, etc.The butchering is where I got more than from that video I watched, because this book takes it further from just field dressing or boning. That's the subject I wanted more info on, too, so I found it quite handy. The recipes are a nice bonus. And all throughout there are some excellent photos.I'm mostly interested in this from a prepper's perspective. It does go into differences in skinning if you're going to tan the hide, but of course does not go into much about tanning itself. It's rather large and heavy to carry, so is best studied prior to need, but is, I feel, a very good instruction tool for preppers or new or medium-experienced hunters.

I've been a small game/bird hunter most of my life so I was familiar with a lot of the concepts in the book. It covered the basics well and introduced some techniques for hunting in terrain that I've never exploited before. The style of writing is relaxed and very enjoyable and is complemented well with pictures. I thought the butchering descriptions could have used a bit more detail but were otherwise good. The descriptions of the type of game animals and recipes were my favorite part and I'm looking forward to putting them to use this fall. I would definitely recommend this to anyone just getting into hunting before the season opens or for a more seasoned hunter looking for a good read or maybe some new insight & ideas.
