A nice roll and write style game
I haven't played the bigger version, but I do enjoy roll and write games. This is pretty neat you basically play three rounds to complete and chapter and each round takes about 15 minutes, you roll three dice, one of them will tell you which type of building it is, the other two will tell you how many spaces it will take on the board, draw them on your sheet and when it starts filling up you can decided to drop out and when everyone one drops out of the round it ends, you score for that round and start the next one. After 3 rounds the chapter ends and you score for the whole chapter and whoever has the most points wins!Pros:I love the progression, the first chapter is basically a tutorial for the rest of the game. Each chapter has it's own gimmick and once you have played through them all it's let's play a specific chapter again type of thing.Neutral:As most roll and write game, the slowest player will make the game last longer and those with analysis paralysis will make the game drag especially in the later rounds of chapters two and three.Cons:Needs more chapters! My favorite one is three but after we were done with chapter 4 we wanted more. Maybe there will be more in the future. While the sheets are double sided with the same round, as with most roll and writes you'll want to laminate/copy some of the sheets if you wish to play this forever.Playing this at more than 4 players makes the game last too long. It says you can play up to 6 and that was fine after everyone figure it out, but playing with new people can be a chore sometimes even if they've played other roll and write games.

Fun solo or group game
The box is very attractive and sturdy, and arrived shrink wrapped. It comes with instructions, dice and a double-sided pad, with a different map on the back. I purchased this for a trip, as the box was small enough to throw in a suitcase. I had fun playing solo and the family enjoyed it too.

One of My Favorites
I bought this because I thought the kids would like drawing polyominoes. Little did I know that I would love it. A lot. And get completely drawn in to the roll & write game revolution that I missed while my kids were very small. This one remains a huge favorite. The YouTube reviewers seem to hate the dice--they are odd and bulky and plasticy, but don't seem so cheap to me as people are complaining about. Maybe if you're used to all these gorgeous RPG dice that are everywhere now* these dice will be odd objects to you. But for me, I’m not bothered by the special polyomino generator dice for this game. There was also one YouTuber who didn't like the translation from the board game version of this game to the roll & write because you don't know what's coming up, but not knowing what is going to be rolled is part of the fun. If you’re deep enough in, you could get no churches until very late in the game. That’s maddening, but also fun. Nobody is guaranteed a perfect game. Control must be surrendered. But I give full points on production quality for the paper. The paper is thick and yummy. My version didn't come with tiny cheap pencils that some other YouTuber mentioned and I'm very happy about that because those pencils that usually come with roll & writes are awful and we never use them anyway. They're a waste of resources. And the game doesn't stop at six anyway! Theoretically, if you had enough sheets, you could do this game with a fairly large group.Cons: Possibly the dice. Also, replacement sheets don't seem to exist. I can't buy a new pack. I also can't find new sheets on the publisher's website. I did buy another box because I used up the first few chapters just so I can scan them for myself next time. I like the paper, though, and would much rather just buy a new pack if it were offered. Not the whole box, just replacement sheets.Pros: Very replayable because you never know what you get. The game progresses in complexity as you go through episodes and chapters—very fun. We can play with the kids. Mine, currently ages 5 and 9, get the concepts just fine. They’ve been know to forget mid-game and not plan for four buildings around a church or something, but they do fine so long as they differentiate their buildings well enough to score properly.Compare to: Cartographers. I looove Cartographers, but this feels less fussy and more streamlined. And definitely easier to score.* If you’re old enough and kept your gaming stuff from the 90’s, go have a peek and what those dice used to be…my husband did and…there is a big difference between the dice of today and the dice of yesteryear.

Entertaining but not as good as original.
The key difference between the Roll and Build version and the “big box” version is that the dice version is more random and that you don’t really know if certain shapes will ever come out. With the polyomino version, you know exactly what hasn’t come out and you can plan ahead, leaving space for those specific shapes, hoping they’ll come out in an ideal sequence. With dice, you could get the same shapes over and over.

DEEP, yet MINIMALISTIC!
I took one look at the contents and said, "You have GOT to be kidding!"But knowing the pedigree of the designer of this gem, I was in for a surprise. It's amazingly deep and relatively quick as well. Furthermore, it tells a story and has an element of addition to it. You want to give it another go again after finishing your last. Dr. Knizia is a genius, who took one successful game and reimplemented it into another successful game. I'm continually amazed at the gift the man has... and will continue to marvel at this one for some time to come. Thanks for reading!

We Built This City
On rock and rollllll! I saw a review on this game and LOVE roll and writes. This one is a good one. Even my bf, who does NOT like roll and writes like this one. We also both love a good campaign game, so there's that as well.

A great legacy game turned Roll and Write
I purchased this game as my wife and I loved the original My City and wanted to see how a game as fun and challenging could be converted into a new format. I am happy to report it is just as fun and engaging as its prior incarnation. The dice rolls make for interesting challenges as you can no longer rely on a consistent deck to eventually display the building you are waiting for, amping up that "push your luck" style tension the first game was known for.An absolute must if you are a fan of the original.

LOVE this game!!
Even better than the original! I LIVE this version. Fun to play a quick episode or two while out, or sit down and play a whole campaign! Great for traveling or taking on vacation. Cannot recommend this game enough to board gamers!
