When I bought my first Vikings Blade Chieftain safety razor, the shave was unbelievably close, smooth and comfortable. The razor came with five blades. These blades were a key ingredient in those marvelous first shaves.Since then (after those original blades were spent), I’ve been “chasing the blade.” I tried to find a similar blade that performed as well as those Swedish steel blades that came with the Vikings Blade Chieftain. Some blade brands came close in replicating that first wonderful shave. But, none hit the bulls-eye.That’s why I was delighted to discover that the folks at Vikings Blade decided to finally bring to market these original blades! I ordered immediately. On first use, they are everything I remember from that first shave!Made in the U.S.A. of premium Swedish steel, these blades are double wrapped (a really nice touch) and provide just the right amount of sharpness and smoothness. My skin borders on the sensitive side and these blades really give me a wonderfully close shave. But, if you have coarse hair, Vikings Blade suggests that these razor blades may not work for you. If you require a sharp blade that also has a silky smooth quality to it, then this is the blade for you! Beginners will love this blade (as did I when I first came back to wet shaving), due to it being just plain safe. And experienced wet shavers will appreciate it’s smooth, yet sharp quality resulting in a BBS three-pass shave.I’ve already used one blade in a vintage Gillette Ball End razor and my original Chieftain safety razor. Each gave me a close, smooth shave. (The Chieftain was much more efficient). But each razor, with the Vikings Blade razor blade installed, gave me a shave without nicks cuts or any irritation at all.I’ve used many different safety razors including double edge, single edge, and injectors. And in using those different razors, I tried a wide variety of razor blades. I can honestly say, these Vikings Blade razor blades are at the very top of my list! My new number one! They give me an exceptional shave. These blades, along with the Chieftain razor are what brought me back to traditional wet shaving!The folks at Vikings Blade say that these blades are good for 5 to 7 shaves. This means your daily shave is only pennies a day. Although I haven't used this first blade that many times yet (two shaves so far), I feel that I’m on track for a good five shaves. (I’ll update this review when I reach that point).Full disclosure: I’ve been a fan and daily user of Vikings Blade products for quite some time. I love their razors, brushes, shaving cream, and now, their razor blades. Am I biased? Yes. But only because I keep getting a magnificent result each and every morning I shave with their products.The Chieftain brought me back to traditional wet shaving. These blades keep me there! Welcome home, my son, again!

These blades are very sharp. I don't notice any hair pulling and they give a close shave. What I do notice is that I'm not cutting up or irritating the skin on my face!

*Amended review, 5/12/24: After roughly two years of using this Viking Razor, I have decided to switch back to the Gillette Mach 3. My previous setup was the Viking Razor with the semi aggressive razor blade. I would shave with this combination about 3 times per week. And unless I were extremely careful and patient, I would cut/slice myself every single time. And because the blades are so sharp, these cuts would cause my face to bleed all over. I thought I would save more time shaving with a safety razor such as this, due to the more aggressive blade, but in reality, I spent more time with the whole shaving process because I had to stop the bleeding from all the cuts.This razor blade setup absolutely cuts facial hair better than a Gillette Mach 3. However, the tradeoff is a bloody face, which in my opinion, is a poor tradeoff. If you only have a few minutes to shave before work, you don't want to have to deal with a mess as you are trying to get yourself together for a long day. I think this type of razor setup (viking safety razor plus mildly aggressive blade) would work only for someone who is able to dedicate time towards a slow, patient, careful shaving session. This razor blade is not for someone who is in a rush.Finally, what set me over the top is the dangerous nature of these razor blades (and I suppose safety razors in general). I have always kept my razors in a cup, which I store inside of my medicine cabinet inside of the bathroom (storing it vertically, as opposed to horizontally). I have always been careful to retrieve the Viking safety razor by its vertical handle. But one time, I was in a rush and accidentally picked up the razor by the underside of the blade. This was completely unintentional. This led to a cut in my thumb that caused immense bleeding for over 45 minutes. I could not get the bleeding to stop without applying consistent pressure. Mind you, this was a mistake on my part, but I imagine other people utilize a similar setup, and in a rush, other people could also make the same mistake. And what if you have a child that likes to snoop around the house? I immediately threw away the safety razor and the remaining blades in the garbage can and will not use safety razors again for the time being.I am back to the Gillette Mach 3. This razor is tried and true. It's a little annoying to have to scrape harder to slice away the smaller stubbles, but it works well for 90% of all hairs. I would rather deal with this, than to nick myself and have a bloody face when shaving with the Viking razor blade.This is an amended review*Old Review (before 5/12/24)For reference I had previously used the Gillette Mach razor 3 and its razor refills for the vast majority of my life. I would shave about once every two days and would replace the razors about once every 3 weeks to one month. Over time, I found that the razors got dull quickly due to its protective features. And after a few shaves with the Mach 3, it became very difficult to shave down the small remaining stubs. The experience left me feeling like I had worked hard for an incomplete result or a 90% solution. I decided to look for something else and came upon the Viking safety razor and their razor ecosystem.The first time I tried the mild safety razor, I nicked myself a fair bit because I was so used to applying downward pressure and force with the gilette Mach 3. I quickly course corrected and learned to simply let the safety razor glide across the face. Guiding the razor to let it do its job as opposed to forcing it to do what I wanted it to do. The experience with the Viking mild safety razor was absolutely fantastic. Fewer shaving strokes meant less work for me. It also shaved all my hair follicles down to the skin level. No remaining black bumps indicating an incomplete job. So once I had acclimated to this new type of shaving, I decided to try the aggressive blade from Viking. The blade was immediately a step up from the mild shave.These blades are the perfect solution for me. The aggressive angles and sharpness of the blades helps me to get as close as possible to my skin and to shave as quickly as possible. Sometimes I will nick myself, but that is more a byproduct of my poor technique and impatience. I do not get irritation as long as I apply shaving cream before shaving.The cost is fantastic too. I paid about $15 for 50 blades. Each blade lasts me about 2 to 3 weeks, depending on usage and my desire for a sharp blade. These last quite a while because the blades are double sided.Unless someone recommends to me something better on the market, I really don't have a strong reason to change my razor (Viking basic) or my razor blade (Viking aggressive)I am immensely satisfied with the product, and I imagine I will continue to be a customer for years to come

The sharpness of the blade is great for a close shave and gives good smoothness without stubble. It is nick resistant for sensitive areas around my chin and neck. No irritation!

These have been my go-to blades a for a few years now and I have no complaints. They are a great quality and very cost-effective blade that, used in conjunction with a double edged safety razor, make for a comparable but much cheaper shave than a traditional plastic razor. A blade will last me almost a full week before needing to be replaced so a box of 50 lasts almost a year. This green packet is a mild blade that doesn't give an overly-aggressive shave so makes for a good blade for a new safety-razor user. Similarly, if you don't need an aggressive shave you might never have reason to switch to anything else. It's a great product and more friendly to the environment and your wallet, than traditional plastic razors. You really can't go wrong.
