Houseplants: The Complete Guide to Choosing, Growing, and Caring for Indoor Plants

Written for US customers.
What I didn't realise when I ordered this book is that the author is American and the publisher hasn't made any modifications for the UK market. So in addition to spellings like 'color', there are references to the furnaces and air conditioning that we all have switched on in our homes all year round, and a section on 'Holiday Plants' that Americans apparently give each other at Thanksgiving and during 'the holiday season'. The worst thing though is that, after making a list of the plants in the Plant Profiles section that I wanted to buy, I couldn't find a single one of them either in my local garden centre or online. I noticed some American websites selling them though, so I guess they are much more common in the US than they are in the UK. I think the publisher really needs to make a UK version of this book, or at least put a large sticker on the front cover warning that it is intended for the US market.Another thing that bothered me was the way the Plant Profiles section (which takes up most of the book) was presented. There's a lot of white space on the pages (more than in the other sections) and there is only a small, circular photo of each plant. A lot of these small photos only show a flower or a leaf or a bit of branch, so you don't get to see the overall look of the plant, which is disappointing. One or two of them showed a hairy white cactus against a white background, which is just silly. I would have liked to see much less white space and bigger photos of the whole plant. Or more text about the plants. Just less white space.I also bought the RHS Practical House Plant Book, which I found much better. I have found the listed plants I want on UK websites, and the photos show the whole plant. I returned the American book and would recommend the RHS one instead.

Lovely book!
I'm really getting into houseplants recently and this book is a brilliant guide for all of the basics you need to know, and the plant profiles are AMAZING! Beautifully laid out with clear information for plant care, propagation etc and also some lovely new ideas for how to display them!

Good advice and easy to read. Highly recommended!
This is a beautiful and helpful guide. Most houseplant books I have seen are quite cluttered and hard to read. This book is a genuine pleasure to flick through and gives really great advice.
