Is the shelf in the middle removable?

The middle shelf is not removable.

the last thing we need to do is look about for keys, when we need whats inside. does it close properly and open easily with no key?

No - you need the keys to open and close! I keep under a photo frame on wall next to it! You can leave keys in the lock if security/ child salty isn’t an issue! But I need the box to be locked!
