A functional straight-through serial cable
Physically, this cable is an 8-pin mini-DIN connector. These were used, among other things, for the serial ports on Apple II and Macintosh computers through approximately the year 2000. (In other words, they are not applicable to modern Macs.) This cable is wired with a straight-through pin layout. This means it can connect a DCE (peripheral) to a DTE (computer) only if the peripheral is wired correctly. As the manufacturer correctly notes, it will NOT work on Apple ImageWriters, as these are wired with a DTE pinout and therefore require a null-modem cable (a cable in which transmit and receive are swapped.) The description says "RS232", but the serial port that these cables connect to is technically an RS-422/RS-423 interface. RS-423 is electrically compatible with RS-232, but uses this round, 8-pin mini-DIN connector, not the 9-pin or 25-pin D-sub connectors of the RS-232 standard. I've attached photos showing the pin layout, as well as what the cable looks like plugged into a vintage Macintosh computer.
