The Life of Our Lord: Written for His Children During the Years 1846 to 1849

A children's book for adults
Dickens wrote this to explain Christ to his children. But he stipulated that it could not be released to the public until well after his death. This is not a Dickens novel but a series of vignettes about the life of Christ - it gives us one more insight into just how good a writer Dickens actually was.

Simply Excellent
Meant to be read to children, Dickens shows again his writing & communication skills, while orienting prose to children.Excellent method to teach young about our Lord Jesus Christ.

NELSON PUBLISHER (green cover, gold lettering)...NOT THE BEST EDITION FOR YOUNG CHILDREN
Dickens' "Life of Our Lord" is a superb publication, a somewhat hidden gem in his literature, written to teach his own children about Jesus. My purpose in writing this evaluation is not re. the work specifically, but the 1991 Nelson edition (green dust jacket, gold lettering), and the way it is described (or really, is not adequately described) by Amazon. It is a fine edition if purchased for adult use. But as a children's book, my complaint lies with the illustrations, beautiful flowers that have nothing to do with the text, or the life of Jesus. Children have always benefitted from illustrations, especially those who are visual learners (most!). With youngsters today, this is even more essential, as they are constantly bombarded by visual images in media and technology, from a very early age. I doubt these beautiful pastel floral prints will do anything to hold their interest. There are many other editions of "Life of Our Lord," some with wonderful pictures following the text, but it is difficult to ascertain how the myriad of Amazon's offerings are illustrated.

Beautiful, wholly Dickens.
How can you NOT love Charles Dickens. This little book is so simply written but so profound. The voice is that of Ebenezer Scrooge's nephew Fred as he was gently chiding Scrooge, "Though Christmas has not put a scrap of gold in my pocket, I dare say it has done me good, and so I say, God bless it."The lessons about kindness toward the poor go straight to the heart. "Never be proud or unkind, my dears, to any poor man, woman, or child. If they are bad, think that they would have been better if they had had kind friends, and good homes, and had been better taught. So, always try to make them better by kind persuading words; and always try to teach and relieve them if you can. And when people speak ill of the poor and miserable, think how Jesus Christ went among them, and taught them, and thought them worthy of His care."While there may be some theological misconceptions, (that people become angels when they die, for example,) it is still a jewel.

Our knowledge of God is progressing through the whole life until we are lifted.
I once removed it from my shopping cart when I read some of the reviews saying that this book has wrongful theology, such as referring Joseph as Jesus’s father, describing Jesus as a nice person and not mentioning his deity. I asked my husband for his opinion(he’s a student at a seminary, lucky me ;)) He said it’s fine that we get it for our 3 years old daughter because our knowledge of the Lord is progressing through our lifetime. He thinks it’s okay for our daughter to start to getting to know Jesus as the kindest person on earth. Surely she would be taught more when she gets a little older.

This famous classic is worth reading every Christmas season.
With slight variation from the full context of Scripture, Dickens has done a superb job of telling this factual story so that all children can enjoy, understand and love.

Important book for your collection!
Charles Dickens wrote this little book for his family, asking that it never be publicly published. It wasn't until many years after his death, that a family member felt it was important enough to share with the world. It's a wonderful witness by Charles Dickens of the Savior Jesus Christ. Love it!!!

Beautifully written!
Wonderful, touching...incredibly and beautifully written...I cried out reading since the first page...we all know this history, but the way Dickens described makes it even more emotional! The book is also beautifully presented, although I think it could be made of a stronger material!

A delight; this review by Rose Petch, the author of "A love Guide out of the Blue...Romance and Marriage too' ..(also on Kindle)
I love this book which sets out in a very readable way a type of summary of the New Testament. This little book is a great encouragement and explanation, for children, but also a 'quick fix' of inspiration for a adult who wants to either be inspired or quickly familiarise with the teachings of peace, and love by, Jesus Christ! Well worth a look!
