You put the herb in the in the clear glass bowl part and water goes into the blue grenade part. Only put about quarter water in the blue bowl part as you can swallow it by mistake if you inhale too hard. Use a lighter to burn the herb while you inhale through the pipe, blue flame lighters are best. Don't burn directly on the same spot continuously but rather move the flame around as you run the risk of burning the herb. Get the liquid part correct otherwise the hookah is unstable and will topple over and smash the bowl. Hope this helps.
